Japan – 725,000

Seems odd considering the album is only certified Platinum* (200,000).

Hi Christoffer!

RIAJ certs are very, very rarely updated. Dookie has been a tremendous catalog seller for many years. Even albums like Insomniac, Nimrod and Warning sold well over 200,000 units in Japan.

Dookie went Platinum there one year before reaching it in the UK for example. Since then it is well over 3xP in the latter country. The situation is the same virtually everywhere outside of North America!

Hoping to see an update of what Revolution Radio ended up at and how Father Of All has performed with it being out for 6 months now. Great article!

I don't know how many years Green Day have been on Spotify but month after month they are dramatically increasing their streams.

Can anyone really explain how Dookie went from 10 x platinum to 20 x platinum over night. It makes me think about Nirvana's Nevermind needing updating as well as RHCP Blood Sugar Sex Magik and other releases from that era.

Hi Jules!

Following The Eagles and Hootie & the Blowfish, that's the 3rd Warner/Rhino-related act to receive one of these very dumb certifications. It looks like they found some caveat to certify global units as US sales. When I exchanged mails with both Warner representatives and RIAA staff after the Eagles certs, they got no explanation except that "older sales can be certified", which wasn't convincing at all. Dookie should have been updated 12/13xP (haven't check the streaming details), but that 20xP is obviously a nonsense.

I remember both the Eagles certification updates (38x for 'Greatest Hits' and 26x for 'Hotel California') being controversial and much debated at the time.

As far as you are able to tell, were they in fact both grossly over estimated?

Hi, thanks for that. Yes it doesn't make sense, but why would Warner do that when most record labels don't do any certification updates at all?
