now that Melon has revealed all the streaming numbers for the songs, how much is that going to change the overall sales for BTS? I saw somewhere that they have over 9B streams from Melon alone, wouldn't that make a huge difference?
We already have a multiplier for Genie numbers to make them consistent with Gaon, and that naturally makes up for Melon streams. When I saw the Melon streams for certain songs I noticed they were way bigger than Gaon numbers which includes Melon and many other Korean platforms. Also unlike Genie weren't numbers there consistent with Gaon.
Ko Ko Bop by EXO for example has more streams than any other song there (800m iirc), Based on Genie and Gaon charts should have way less than that across all Korean platforms. BTS, Wanna One and many other Idol groups specifically have way bigger numbers than Gaon suggests too.
Most of these streams do not come from non Koreans using the app either as the biggest songs there only has a few million unique listeners in total.
To me these numbers are not realistic at all for a market like South Korea. The most streamed songs in fairly bigger streaming markets like the UK, Germany, Japan etc range from about 200-400m streams.
In conclusion it seems like there are way more botted and inorganic streams in South Korea than anywhere else. Gaon and Genie seem to filter these ones out of their numbers to a much bigger degree while Melon doesn't do anything about them. Therefore we will stick to Genie to reflect the South Korean streaming market.
Hi, I've always wondered If non-official videos on youtube such as lyric videos ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dQ3TCDlpX_k) count towards official charts (billboard etc). I think you could answer this question I've had for years. I can't find any sources that confirm they do, even tho It makes sense for them to count because they're copyrighted
Billboard US and Canada used to count them from 2013 to mid 2019, since then it's only official videos, although live performances etc from official channels are still included. Most other charts around the world doesn't include YT at all except for the UK and Japan (Oricon & Billboard Japan), although that's only official videos as well.
I agree to a degree they should be counted. Lyric videos, fancams etc seems totally fine since the revenue goes to the label / artist. The reason they got removed was for the most part meme videos etc using just a few seconds of a song.
Okay, thank you sm. I understand memes that use just a few seconds of a song shouldn't count, but they could've just made rules for that, not completely ignore non-official videos. Some bts lyric videos have over 100M views and It's a shame they aren't counted. Thanks again 🙂
When you say live performances from official channels are counted. Does that include James Corden channel and others like him, or just performances from bighit and BANGTANTV's channels?
Yeah, never understood why they just didn't put a time limit on it or something
is it true that melon has implanted a new rule where a device can only stream a song once per every 24 hours to avoid bot streams? I think i read an article about something like that but I'm not sure. thank u so much for answering. I appreciate the detailed response!
Possibly, it seems like they cracked down on this the past few years. But the damage is already done to song totals.
This article needs to be update urgently. I think they reach 70 million EAS.
They have 30 million album sold now in japan and korea combined according to the korean charts.
What is ORPHAN? Why it is put in the table as album where Fire and Save me are singles? They are from Young Forever, no?
Thank you all for your hard work collecting and converting BTS’s data! I do have a few q’s if you don’t mind answering. I know your last BTS update was Sept 2020 so:
1. Do you know when you’ll update next to reflect their recent BE album and Dynamite’s soaring sales?
2. Army is discussing WMA Diamond award, which to our understanding is based on IFPI’s physical & digital sales data: is that correct? And if so, can you please direct me to which section of your BTS data includes only their physical & digital sales? We are clueless on exactly how many sales BTS has that doesn’t include everything like streams. Your data suggests they have equivalence to 56.8M; however, I’m assuming it’s shy of 40M to date if only p&d are counted.
Hope to hear back from you, thank you!
