Skits on rap albums is a difficult case indeed, personally I would disregard them and only look at the least streamed songs, in the case of The Marshall Mathers LP that would be Amityville (23m) and Remember Me (24m).

I don't understand your last point though, especially the examples of Fitter Happier and Four Sticks, here are the least streamed songs on these albums :

The Tourist - 23m
Electioneering - 22.6m
Fitter Happier - 17.9m

Misty Mountain Hop - 40m
The Battle Of Evermore - 24.9m
Four Sticks - 15.7m

How are these "skip favorites" ? To me they just indicate people listening to the entire albums.

As for the number of tracks, yes the higher the number the less likely people will listen to the entire album, that's why double albums are riskier than normal albums, but I'm not sure how relevant it is to this discussion.

I made one a few posts above and someone downvoted it, maybe it's you ? That would be pretty funny.

Love to see Mr Brightside becoming such a classic, one of my favorite songs from the 2000s.

I'm not sure what happened with Coolio but I think his song got considerable exposure when it was used to promote that Sonic movie from 2020 so that might be the explanation...

These 'skip favorites' are indicative of people listening to the albums, no doubt! My point was the opposite, there are more people listening to these albums (OK Computer / IV), it's just that for some reason one track is skipped more often than the others. And some other people will skip another.

In the end, there may have been 30m+ streams of 'IV' from start to finish, but with Four Sticks skipped 1 time every 2, or The Battle Of Evermore 1 time every 6. The thing is, an album with tracks at 40-39-38-17 million certainly got more 'entire' streams, although with 1 skip, than albums with songs at 24-23-22-22 million. It would be unfair to say that the former is less streamed than the latter, just because it has 1 track skipped more often. If we try to argue we can't look at hits to gauge the streaming success of an album (which I don't agree with but it's another subject), then certainly we can't look at 1 skip favorite to gauge the streaming success of an album either. There are skits, there are 'talked' tracks like Fitter Happier, or What's Ya Phone #, or simply a track not as strong at the end, which doesn't benefit from being in-between super strong tracks. Throw there Endless, Nameless, Oh Daddy and so many more there. To me there are no way Ride The Lightning is more streamed than Nevermind just because Escape has more streams than Endless, Nameless.

The number of tracks is highly relevant because it impacts the time needed an album. If we want to know the most streamed albums, people listening albums from start to finish are also very willing to do it multiple times. It isn't the same if an album is 40 minutes long or 120 minutes long. The same streaming session will give 3 times more 'album streams' to the former, yet it hasn't really been more streamed.

For example, it's clear that Hamilton has been streamed more than DSOTM. It's least streamed song has 50 million plays, less than 65 million yes, but it has 46 tracks running for 142 minutes. How many people get 142 minutes available at once to play an album? The way all its tracks are at 50 million or more is insane, people spent much more time streaming it than DSOTM and there have been undoubtedly much more people doing it too, we can't overlook that.

By the way, you said yourself to be looking for 'people listening to entire albums, not just a few songs'. Several of the albums you list yet do have only 'a few songs'. How can we put Kind of Blue ahead of Back In Black when each song of the former, ranked in streams order, has way, way less streams than its counterpart on the latter album, in spite of that one having 5 more tracks?

Actually, I think that the best way to not corrupt the data too much with the album length or one or two weaker tracks is precisely to pick a Nth track, deep enough to avoid singles, but early enough to not enter the album 'falls' either. The 6th-8th track looks perfect for this, even if there are always a few specific cases like Wish or Blue.

I think you're overcomplicating the subject, either people listen to an album or they don't. If they're skipping tracks (are people really doing that btw ?), then they're not listening to an album, they're listening to songs.

"It isn’t the same if an album is 40 minutes long or 120 minutes long. The same streaming session will give 3 times more ‘album streams’ to the former, yet it hasn’t really been more streamed."

So would you say the streams of an 8 minute song are worth twice the streams of a 4 minute song ?

"How can we put Kind of Blue ahead of Back In Black when each song of the former, ranked in streams order, has way, way less streams than its counterpart on the latter album, in spite of that one having 5 more tracks?"

Again, I'm talking about albums. The fact that AC/DC have five popular songs on the same album is irrelevant, the question is how many people are listening to the actual album.

You know what is strange is on this list, most of the songs are rock songs and yet today there is no rock music in the charts. Rock music seems to have better longevity but there are no new artists in the mainstream. Really BIZARRE!

One of the reasons is that most people using spotify grew up around the 90s, when rock music was still relevant. Also, to be successful today rock bands would have to sound different than these old bands, and innovation has its limits, at some point everything (or almost everything) has been done.

I mainly agree with you in this that I'm overcomplicating the subject. I suppose it's because looking at the raw 'actual album streams' stat ends up as more of a trivia stat that something with a real, strong meaning that I always feel the need to add rules so that the indicator means something in the end. Although I would still put an * on that entire album stream raw stat, as technically all it grants is that the user went from the first track to the 30th second of the last track, rather than him listening to it entirely. I mean, when an album has 5 tracks like Wish You Were Here, that the last is the weakest and also lasts 12mn+, chances are that out of the 32m which started the song, many millions haven't gone to its end, and as such they haven't stream the actual album 'from start to finish'.

About the worth of streams depending on the track length, it's definitely something that misses on most indicators nowadays, we can't overlook it. You used the Elvis vs Jackson comparison about videos, I'll be a bit provocative and compare the big 3 on that to give some food for thought.

Nowadays, the largest consumtion of an artist catalog is done through the 'This Is...' playlists, especially since they switched from continuing the discography of an artist to air a related music radio when listening an album is over.

Now, let's try it, we streams This Is Elvis Presley. What happens? In 2 hours and 31 minutes, we gave him 50 streams, streaming the entire playlist. Next, we invest these same 2h31 listening to This Is The Beatles. We give them the exact same number of streams, 50. They are luckier yet as they have an exception, a 'This Is' playlist cracking the 50 songs limit, with theirs expanding to 91 tracks. You can listen the 41 additional songs in barely 1h47. As the last song lasts over 5 minutes, they effectively gain 91 streams in less than 4h14.

Then, you go on and stream This Is Michael Jackson (yeah, that's a very busy day of streaming music). You spend 2h31 on it, and listen to... 34 songs. Not 50, 34. Out of these 34, one goes to Rockwell, 8 to the Jackson 5, 4 to the Jacksons. For the exact same time you gave 50 streams to both Elvis and the Beatles, you actually gave a mere 21 to Jackson. And if you stick around some more minutes, you will be served with two more Jacksons songs before hitting a 22nd stream from him.

If you listen to his playlist in full, you will still give him 50 streams as it is made of 65 recordings, 50 credited to him and 15 others. That will take you 4h49 yet, nearly twice as much as the first 50 of Elvis and the Beatles and over half an hour more than the 91 songs of the Beatles.

We're well into the final quarter of 2022.
I wonder how many of these tracks are gonna make the cut come jan23? Cut off is gonna be 800M, many of these tracks are around 780M now.

Spoiler alert. Dancing Queen is surging and is well over 800M already. No Scrubs and Somebody to Love are yet to pass 750M...

Look out for "newbie" Kate Bush Running Up That Hill. The "Stranger Things" hit has just passed 770M!!!
Unfortunately I have no idea where it was at in jan22.

jan22:
54 (57) ROLLING STONES – Paint It Black – 671M
55 (50) AEROSMITH – I Don’t Want To Miss A Thing – 669M

59 (58) U2 – With Or Without You – 659M
60 (-) AC/DC – You Shook Me All Night Long – 652M
61 (56) QUEEN – Somebody To Love – 650M
_______________________________________________

And 616M since June, that's a minimum right?
Because in some contries it's no longer charting.

I remember it was at 125m right before it blew up, slightly ahead of Wuthering Heights at the time.

I never thought I'd see the day when Kate Bush would get global recognition by the masses but I'm happy for her, she deserves it (being one of the boldest, most experimental artists from the 80s or from any time period).

Great. I also saw it was roughly on par with Wuthering, but could't recall the numbers.

I did some digging and apparently it only had 102m streams on may 25th (just before Stranger Things), 100m on april 20th and 80m in june 2021. So maybe 90m in january?

And so these "global" Spotify/Kworb numbers are far from global apparently... They only include charting weeks, is that it?

I see.
Good find! 102,246,159.
May 25th you say? Dont see the date in the link.

Kworb include charting weeks only.

Yeah the person who posted it said it's from may 25th, which tracks with other numbers (100m in april...etc.).

I just realized Kworb's total is missing the week ending august 18th... In their "daily chart totals" Running Up is listed with 649.9m streams, which makes more sense. That would leave about a dozen million from these missing weeks.

The top 4 is the same as last year, but Nirvana moves to #5. 33 tracks have now passed 1B plays. The latest being "Come As You Are", making "Nevermind" the only album with 2 songs in that club.
"Bo Rhap" have now passed 2B - it's more than 0.5B in front of #2.

Coolio (#30-17) and Tears for Fears (#50-34) are the biggest jumpers. Dr. Dre (#32-24) and Foo Fighters (#49-41) have big jumps too.

There are 8 new entries. The 6 new entries by ABBA, Brenda Lee, Michael Jackson, Notorious B.I.G., The Clash and Fleetwood Mac have been on the list (or close to it) before.

But the big news are Kate Bush and Gloria Gaynor. Gloria shoots straight to #37 with close to 1B plays! She should most likely have been on the list for years, I somehow missed her so far. There are many versions of "I Will Survive" on Spotify. The biggest version at 462M has less than half of the songs total.
Kate Bush, on the other hand, has never been close to the list before. Thanks to the Netflix series "Stranger Things" Running Up That Hill shoots to #53 with 859M plays - around 760-770M in 2022 alone!!!

The Eagles and Toto are replaced by GnR and the Police in the top 10. Smash Mouth drops #38-51, Aerosmith from #55-67 and Led Zeppelin from #57-68.
Queen's "Somebody to Love" drops out of the list, however they still have 6 songs on there.

Top 20 gains since jan 1st 2022:

1 Kate Bush - Running – 760-770M
2 Coolio – Gangsta’s Paradise 354M
3 Queen – Bo Rhap – 339M
4 Nirvana – Smells Like – 339M
5 Police – Breath – 319M
6 Mariah - Xmas - 312M
7 Tears for Fears - Rule the World - 298M
8 GnR – Sweet Child – 291M
9 Queen – Don’t Stop 289M
10 Dr. Dre - Still - 289M
11 Aha – Take On Me – 286M
12 Goo Goo Dolls - Iris - 268M
13 Eagles – Hotel Cali – 267M
14 Michael Jackson – Billie Jean 258M
15 Radiohead - Creep - 255M
16 Wham - Xmas - 253M
17 Journey – Don’t Stop – 253M
18 Fleetwood Mac – Dreams – 251M
19 Queen – Another One – 250M
20 Oasis – Wonderwall – 248M

Coolio was huge last year - still, Kate Bush had more than a 2-1 lead.
Big numbers fom Nirvana, Police, Tears for Fears, GnR and Dr. Dre too. And Queen of course, although they are not as dominating as in the past few years.

Fleetwood Mac's Dreams seems to have cooled off a bit too. In 2021 it was 2nd only to Bo Rhap with 302M. In 2022 it was #18 with 251M.

The Xmas songs did very strong in 2022, Mariah (219-312M) and Wham (193-253M) both had great increases compared to 2021. Brenda Lee's Xmas (153-236M) also saw a huge increase and is just outside the top 20 (#23) for 2022.

Bon Jovi's Prayer (245M). Earth, Wind & F's September (235M) and a trio of AC/DC classics (BIB 238M, HTH 234M & Thunder 228M) are just outside the top 20 as well.

Kate Bush wasn't the only one pushed by "Stranger Things" btw. Metallica's Master of Puppets had around 222M plays in 2022 compared to 80-90M in 2020/2021.
222M in 2022 is about the same as Enter Sandman and almost 50M more than Nothing Else Matters!
Master's total as of 1/1/2023 is 636M. So it's not likely to make the list anytime soon.

I have to admit, I've just never understood the crazy popularity of Iris by the Goo Goo Dolls, especially in the UK. On the OCCs Rock chart, it has the most week's on chart (824) by quite a bit and pretty much never seems to leave the Top5 and its currently at #1.

13 (12) Paul McCartney – Wonderful Xmastime – 411M (85M)

14 (13) Nat King Cole – The Xmas Song – 411M (91M)

15 (-) Bing Crosby – I Wish You A Merry Xmas – 409M (??)
16 (11) Bing Crosby – White Xmas – 409M (79M)

2 "new" entries. But you can't really call Burl and Bing new to Xmas can you, LOL!
In both cases there are large Orphan versions of the songs, so I missed them last year.
With 761M Burl Ives' "Holly Jolly" almost made the main chart in my previous post.

It was a strong season in 2022. Apart from Sinatra and Chris Rea all other titles saw increases compared to 2021.
I already mentioned huge increases by the top 3 in my previous post. Dean Martin also went from 81-139M, Jose Feliciano 100-142M, Andy Williams 117-147M and Bobby Helms 143-194M!

The newly discovered Burl Ives entry (see Xmas post below) pushes Led Zeppelin’s “Whole Lotta Love” out of the chart.

With 109M plays in 2022 Jackson 5's "I Want You Back" misses the top 10 of 2022 (#13) and drops #5-9 overall.

I suppose Burl Ives should be in that list, but his 2022 total is unknown.

I hate christmas songs and hate the way they spoil these lists so much. Nobody gives a shit about them for about 11 months of the year, then everybody seems to go all sentimental and just streams the shit out of them in December.
