If anyone had the recipe for success in the 80s and 90s music business it was producer Robert John "Mutt" Lange.
Perhaps best known for marrying (and divorcing) one of the biggest female stars (and hottest woman?) of the 90s - Shania Twain.
"Mutt" has produced multi-platinum albums and big hits for artists like AC/DC, Foreigner, Def Leppard, The Cars, Billy Ocean, Bryan Adams, Michael Bolton, The Corrs, Nickelback, Maroon 5, Lady Gaga, Muse and of course then spouse Shania Twain.

He had great success in the US especially. I mean, who else has produced 6 Diamond albums with 3 different artists (AC/DC, Leppard & Twain)? He also wrote or co-wrote many of the hits along the way incl. one of the biggest singles of all time: Bryan Adams' "(Everything I Do) I do it for you".
Which songs are still played on Spotify?
Here are the 20 biggest songs on Spotify, produced by Robert John "Mutt" Lange:

1 AC/DC - Back in Black - 1980 - 565.1M
2 AC/DC - Highway to Hell - 1979 - 562.0M
3 AC/DC - You Shook Me All Night Long - 1980 - 394.0M
4 Def Leppard - Pour Some Sugar On Me - 1987 - 244.9M
5 Bryan Adams - (Everything I Do) I Do It For You - 1991 - 222.2M
6 Shania Twain - Man! I Feel Like A Woman! - 1997 - 203.2M
7 Maroon 5 - Misery - 2010 - 175.6M
8 Shania Twain - You're Still the One - 1997 - 169.8M
9 Nickelback - Burn It To the Ground - 2008 - 160.5M
10 AC/DC - Shoot to Thrill - 1980 - 150.2M
11 AC/DC - Hells Bells - 1980 - 146.1M
12 The Cars - Drive - 1984 - 135.3M
13 Nickelback - If Today Was You're Last Day - 2008 - 133.3M
14 Muse - Psycho - 2015 - 131.2M
15 Shania Twain - That Don't Impress Me Much - 1997 - 100.7M
16 Foreigner - Waiting for A Girl Like You - 1981 - 98.2M
17 Lady Gaga - You And I - 2011 - 86.8M
18 Nickelback - Gotta Be Somebody - 2008 - 82.6M
19 Bryan Adams - Please Forgive Me - 1993 - 79.5M
20 Foreigner - Juke Box Hero - 1981 - 77.8M

And there's no doubt "Mutt" has a huge impact on the sound of these artists. Listen to Shania's "Man I Feel Like a Woman" and you can hear sonic similarities to rock songs like Def Leppard's "Make Love Like A Man" or Bryan Adams' "Can't Stop This Thing We Started".

It would seem that "Mutt" is less relevant these days. Just 3 tracks from the 2010s in this top 20. Then again he is now 71 years old and not working that much.

As You can see Led Zeppelin is also about to get their first 500M track on Spotify. The 1971 classic "Stairway to Heaven" is not the oldest track to join the club though. That's Marvin Gaye's "Ain't No Mountain" from 1967. (Here Comes the Sun, Fortunate Son and Have You Ever Seen the Rain are also older than "Stairway")

But at 8:02 min. "Stairway" is by far the LONGEST catalog song to pass 500M. In fact of the 54 songs above the 500M mark only three are over 6 min. long (Paradise City 6:45, Hotel California 6:31 and Nothing Else Matters 6:28) Guns N Roses are likely to reclaim that record next year though, as the 8:56 min. "November Rain" has 443M plays.

It seems peoples need to find some happiness amongst all this Covid gloom, led to Christmas songs being streamed from an earlier point this year and in far, far greater numbers than in previous years, with many tracks recording some outstanding streaming figures over the past 3 or so months.

On the back of this, Mariah Careys All I Want For Christmas Is You has passed 1B on Spotify, it's 11 versions now total 1,001,941,051. It has added approximately 253m streams since January, around 21m between Jan-Sep, around 10m in October and around 222m in Nov and Dec (so far).

16 Earth, Wind – September – 192M
17 AC/DC – Highway – 192M
18 Backstreet Boys – I Want – 185M
19 Bon Jovi - Prayer - 184M
20 AC/DC - Thunder - 179M

I don't have the exact number for Fleetwood Mac's "Dreams", but it was about 350M last January, so an increase of around 255M!

While Queen is still very visible in this top 20, they are not as dominant any more. In the list for 18/19 gains they occupied the top 3 and had 6 in the top 20.
With 171M MJ's "Billie Jean" is outside the top 20 of 2020.

34 (35) NIRVANA – Come As You Are – 608M
In case you wonder. Last year I put this at #44 by mistake. I somehow missed the unplugged version. #35 should be correct.

Bee Gees' "Stayin Alive" is also at 499M! I realized there is a 27.5M version on the soundtrack.

The last 60s list I posted was a top 15 from March 23rd 2020. I've expanded it to a top 20. Let me know if I miss any.

"Here Comes the Sun" moves a step closer to the top and with this pace it should claim #1 later in 2021.
"It's the Most Wonderful Time of the Year" by Andy Williams is the big new entry. I don't know if it should've been included in March already.
"The Sound of Silence" drop 5 spots to #19, due to just 51.9M plays since March.

Here are the top 10 since 23/3/2020, although Andy WIlliams' Christmas tune should probably be in there somewhere.

1 Beatles - Sun - 138,0M

3 (4) THE EAGLES – Hotel California – 847.3M
4 (3) EARTH, WIND & FIRE – September – 839.9M
5 (6) AC/DC – Highway To Hell – 701.6M
6 (5) LYNYRD SKYNYRD – Sweet Home Alabama – 694.0M
7 (7) QUEEN – We Will Rock You – 681.0M
8 (8) BOB MARLEY – Is This Love – 614.8M
9 (19) FLEETWOOD MAC – Dreams – 603.8M
10 (10) CREEDENCE CLEARWATER REVIVAL – Have You Ever Seen the Rain – 575.2M
11 (9) DIRE STRAITS – Sultans of Swing – 571.1M
12 (11) LED ZEPPELIN – Stairway to Heaven – 527.0M
13 (12) QUEEN – Somebody To Love – 526.8M
14 (14) ELTON JOHN – Rocket Man – 502.9M
15 (13) BOB MARLEY – Three Little Birds – 498.8M
16 (18) BEE GEES – Stayin’ Alive – 498.5M (as of 3/1/2021)
17 (17) PINK FLOYD – Wish You Were Here – 482.7M
18 (-) FLEETWOOD MAC – Go Your Own Way – 480.7M
19 (15) QUEEN – We Are the Champions – 474.0M
20 (-) FLEETWOOD MAC – The Chain – 469.3M

Top 10 since the list from March 24th 2020:

1 Queen - Bo Rhap - 236.9M
2 Fleetwood - Dreams - 224.7M
3 Queen - Stop - 196.2M
4 Eagles - California - 177.1M
5 Earth - September - 153,8M
6 AC/DC - HTH - 150.0M
7 Lynyrd - Alabama - 131.9M
8 Queen - WWRY - 129.7M
9 Bee Gees - 117.7M
10 CCR - Rain - 117.1M

Obviously the big climber here is Fleetwood Mac's "Dreams", which went viral due to TikTok this year. It jumps from #19-9, and is 2nd to Bo Rhap only in this time frame.
The renewed popularity in Fleetwood Mac also alllowed "Go Your Own Way" and "The Chain" to enter the top 20. All three tracks are from the 1977 classic "Rumours".

They push Aerosmith's "Dream On" (461M) and Stevie Wonder's "Superstition" (449.8M) out of the list.

Another jumper on the list is "Stayin' Alive" (#18-16), but that is mainly because the 27.5M version on the soundtrack was missing last time around.

Queen's "Somebody to Love" also gained 16.2M from a feature on a GH set by George Michael that I didn't include previously. Almost enough to pass Zeppelin, but not quite.

19 (19) U2 – With Or Without You – 517.2M
20 (-) HALL & OATES – You Make My Dreams – 509.1M

Journey still tops the 80s list, soon becoming the first 80s track with 1B+ plays on Spotify.

Top 10 since March 24th 2020:

1 Wham - Xmas - 202.9M
2 A-ha - Take - 180.1M
3 Police - Breath - 175,7M
4 Journey - Believin' - 173,4M
5 Queen - Dust - 168.8M
6 Toto - Africa - 163.3M
7 AC/DC - BIB - 158.8M
8 GnR - Child - 156.3M
9 Queen - Pressure - 155.9M
10 Bon Jovi - Prayer - 141.7M

The big mover since March 2020 is Wham's Last Xmas, however on the full calendar year A-ha, Police, Journey & Queen still tops it.
So the big mover is really A-ha, topping GnR for #4 spot overall, while gaining a bit on the top 3 as well.
GnR still have an impressive three tracks from their debut album "Appetite for Destruction" on the list (similar to Fleetwood Mac's Rumours on the 70s list)

The only new entry is Hall & Oates "You Make My Dreams" at #20. We missed it previously as Freek kindly pointed out a few months ago.
It pushes Bon Jovi's "You Give Love a Bad Name" (502.9M) out of the list.

AC/DC's YSMANL (498.8M) and MJ's Beat It (493.5M) are both still lurking outside the list too.

19 (20) AEROSMITH – I Don’t Want To Miss A Thing – 540.3M
20 (19) SPICE GIRLS – Wannabe – 535.4M

Oasis still tops the 90s list, although Mariah made a real run for it this December. No changes in the top 5, but Backstreet Boys is knocking on the door.

AC/DC makes the top 20 (top 10 even) for the 3rd straight decade (also 70's & 80s). The only artist to do so.

Coolio makes the list this time, pushing TLC's 1999 hit "No Scrubs" (534.0M) out. It actually seems like apart from Backstreet Boys, the late 90s hits are strugling. Goo Goo Dolls (1998), Smash Mouth (1999) and Foo Fighters (1997) drops a few spots, and 9 of these top 10 tracks since March 23rd 2020 are from the early 90s:

1 Mariah - Xmas - 252.6M

19 (16) BEYONCÉ – Crazy in Love – 706.1M
20 (19) SNOW PATROL – Chasing Cars – 701.3M

Jason Mraz holds off the competetion, slightly extending his lead on the rest.
Still, if Linkin Parks's Numb was combined with the Numb/Encore (538.8M) mash-up it would top the list with 1312.1M.

Kanye drops from #10-14 due to just 104.2M plays since March - the lowest of all 20 tracks.

The top 10 since March 23rd 2020:

1 Mraz - Yours - 185.8M
2 Killers - Mr. B - 175.4M
3 Linkin - End - 172.0M
4 Coldplay - Scientist - 160.6M
5 Maroon 5 - Loved - 160.2M

8 Eminem - Collapse - 153.7M

3 from Coldplay and 3 from Eminem in that list, but maybe a bit disappointing that Eminem has none in the top 6?

The 2 Xmas benefits from missing the early part of 2020. Bo Rhap is the year #1.

I missed ABBA's "Dancing Queen" - should be #19 with 478.4M.

On another note, one slight issue I've always had, is whether or not Another Brick In The Wall by Floyd should have three separate totals for Parts I, II & III or just one total.
