Almost two years ago I posted a list of 59 songs released BEFORE the year 2000 with at least 200M plays on Spotify (live versions, single versions etc incl). It was led by Oasis "Wonderwall" at 413M - the only one at 400M+

Marvin Gaye "Sexual Healing" (#29 in feb18), Blackstreet "No Diggity" (#45), Bob Marley "Three Little Birds" (#46), Stevie Wonder "Superstition" (#49), Red Hot Chili Peppers "Otherside" (#59) also dropped out of the list.
The impact of the motion picture "Bohemian Rhapsody" is immense. Not only is the title track now #1 on the list - far ahead of #2 - Queen 3 songs in the top 5 and 6 songs above the 400M mark (and one more very close).
Besides Queen we see new top 10 entries by Toto and Aha. Other big climbers include The Police, 3 AC/DC tracks and the Backstreet Boys! Bryan Adams and Coolio also make new entries, both were bubling under last time around.
Elsewhere we see Bob Marley, Dr. Dre, Foo Fighters and Nirvana with big drops.
Marvin Gaye's "Sexual Healing" has the biggest drop by far, from #29 to well outside the list at 354M, due to only 128M plays since feb18.
I say only, because his other hit "Ain't No Mountain" had 240M in the same period! Back in feb18 they were allmost neck-to-neck!
The Top 20 gains since February 2018:
1 Queen - Bo Rhap - 766M
2 Queen - Don't Stop 528M
3 Queen - Another One - 473M
4 Toto - Africa - 422M
5 Oasis - Wonderwall - 422M
6 Queen - Under Pressure - 403M
7 Aha - Take On Me - 382M
8 Mariah - Xmas - 375-380M (354M without Justin)
9 Journey - Don't Stop - 360M
10 Eagles - Hotel Cali - 352M
11 Earth, Wind - September - 347M
12 Police - Breath - 342M
13 GnR - Sweet Child - 340M
14 Queen - We Will - 326M
15 Nirvana - Smells Like - 322M
16 AC/DC - Highway - 309M
17 Queen - Break Free - 308M (since jan18)
18 Backstreet Boys - I Want - 302M
19 MJ - Billie Jean - 297M
20 AC/DC - BIB - 297M
Carey was around 750m on 2nd January. Think you're missing the Carey/Bieber AIW' version, at around 59m.
You're right. I missed the duet. I believe I did back in feb18 too, so I can't be sure how much the song gained since then, but it moves to 5th place on the list.
Thanks
Thanks, just realized that actually.
I missed Whitney too. I Wanna Dance With Somebody.
Hi Thomas,
This is what I have for Careys track;
01/01/18: 365m
01/01/19: 553m (+188m)
01/01/20: 749m (+196m)
So between Feb 2018 and now, it's probably just behind Take On Me, having risen by about 375m-380m in that time frame.
But whose fault is it? Katy's team for not putting it on her page? I mean, many artists whose names appear as only a feature have those songs on their pages like Demi's Solo and the total number of streams get benefited.
I found one more. The Cranberries "Zombie" is at 430M, good enough for a spot at #44.
Led Zeppelin, Green Day and Dr. Dre have all recently passed the 400M mark, Queen's "Somebody To Love" is just a few thousand short.
Furthermore, last time I somehow missed the unplugged version of Nirvana's "Come As You Are", so it moves to #34 instead.

Why not include songs from the 2000s ? Lose Yourself (2002) is clearly a catalog song, so is Mr Brightside (2004). I'm pretty sure Martin posted a list of pre-2010 songs somewhere, I'd definitely like to see an updated version of that.
You're probably right. Same goes for Linkin Park "In the End" (2000) and System of a Down "Chop Suey" (2001).
My concern is maybe songs from the latter part of the 00's have an advantage over older songs.
But maybe I'll include them next time around...
I started looking for 00's songs with 400M+ streams on Spotify. Even without adding live versions, remixes etc I found 42 songs so far. I believe that goes to show they do have an advantage over older songs. To include them in the list above would flood that list. A seperate list might be in order.
42 songs doesn't seem that much when you consider there are 25 songs from the 90s and... 4 songs from the 60s. The more recent a song is, the more likely it is to be still popular, it's just the nature of things.
I just thought it was supposed to be like your wonderful thread on UKMIX for catalog albums, where as you know about half of the albums were from the 80s. Spotify started in 2011 but only became big around 2014 or so, I think a 2009 song can be considered a "catalog" song in that context.
Could you make a list of radio airplay in this way? If you visit this site, you can check the figures on a yearly basis.

Even if "all-time" list is hard, It would be good to post it "last year"
TOP SPOTIFY TRACKS OF 60s:
(As of 23/3/2020)
(I probably forgot a bunch, please let me know 🙂 )
1 MARVIN GAYE – Ain’t No Mountain High Enough – 499.3M

14 SIMON & GARFUNKEL - The Sound of Silence - 280.1M
15 CREEDENCE CLEARWATER REVIVAL – Bad Moon Rising - 275.5M
Marvin Gaye rules with almost 500M. The Beatles, Rolling Stones and CCR each have two tracks on the list.
I'd like to extend it to a top 20, but suspect I'm missing some in the 300M-400M range?
"Here Comes the Sun" was the biggest track since the last update 2 months ago with 27.8M, followed by "Ain't No Mountain" with 21.3M.
The Beatles classic has moved past "I Want You Back" and is on course to overtake "Fortunate Son" as well.
I intend to follow up with the 70s, 80s, 90s & 00s later.
TOP SPOTIFY TRACKS OF 70s:

18 BEE GEES - Stayin' Alive - 380.8M
19 FLEETWOOD MAC - Dreams - 379.1M
20 AEROSMITH - Dream On - 378.5M
Not surprisingly Queen are the "Kings" of the 70s!
The top two tracks are far ahead of the pack and they've got 5 tracks in the top 20!
Bob Marley is the only other artist with more than one track on the list. Fleetwood Mac is close though, with "Go Your Own Way" at #21 with 377.7M.
The Biggest mover since the last update was easily "Bohemian Rhapsody" with an incredible 58.4M followed by "Don't Stop Me Now" with 42.6M. "Hotel California" (35.2M) and "Highway to Hell" (31.3M) are the only other here to top 30M.
So the Freddie biopic is still having an effect, but it is slightly fading. "We Will Rock You" was actually recently overtaken by HTH. And "Somebody to Love" isn't gaining on "Stairway to Heaven" either.
"Rocket Man" is still helped by Elton's movie though. At 25.2M it is the biggest mover of the bottom half of the list (8th. overall).
Slowest mover? "Superstition" with a moderate 13M. Likely to be overtaken by several tracks these coming months.

18 GUNS N ROSES – Paradise City – 431.8M
19 U2 – With Or Without You – 419.6M
20 BON JOVI – You Give Love A Bad Name – 410.5M
Journey holds off Queen at #1 of the 80s!
Though not quite as dominant as in the 70s, Queen still have 3 tracks in the top 20! And so does Guns 'n Roses - from the same album even!
Bon Jovi also manages to put two tracks on the list, keeping two other giants from a 2nd entry. (MJ's "Beat It" at #21 with 407.1M, and AC/DC's "You Shook Me All Night Long" at #22 with 386.7M)
"Another One Bites the Dust" was the biggest track these past two months with 38.8M. But it was closely followed by no less than 8 more tracks with 30M+ plays. A sign that the "Bohemian" biopic effect is slowly fading. "Every Breath You Take" is actually 2nd with 37.9M.
"You Give Love a Bad Name" was the smallest non-Xmas track since the last update. But still with a healthy 20.3M.

20 AEROSMITH – I Don’t Want To Miss A Thing – 442.5M
Oasis have the biggest song of the 90s, 2nd only to "Bohemian Rhapsody" in the previous millennium.
Depending on the season Mariah Carey or Nirvana are runner-up.
Nirvana are likely gonna take 2nd place before summertime, however chances are Mariah will reclaim the 2nd spot during Xmas 2020.
Nirvana have two entries, and so does Red Hot Chili Peppers and Metallica.
AC/DC makes the list for a 3rd straight decade (and all 3 entries in the top 10). They are the only artist to make 3 of these lists.
At 440.9M "Bitterswet Symphony" by the Verve is narrowly topped by the huge Aerosmith ballad from the "Armageddon" movie.
Aerosmith also narrowly made the 70s list (with a 0.8M margin over Fleetwood Mac). So they actually made it to two of these list, but could just as well have been absent from both!
With 36.9M "Wonderwall" was also the biggest track of the past two months. Only two more tracks topped 30M, "Smells Like Teen Spirit" (32.5M) and "I Want It That Way" (32.1M). The latter boosted by the DNA album and tour.
The smallest non-Xmas track was "Wannabe" with 17.9M. "Everlong" (19.3M) and "No Scrubs" (18.5M) were also below 20M.

The 00s was the decade of Eminem and Coldplay. The former has 3 entries - incl. two 800M+ tracks in the top 5! And the latter have 4 entries!
But Jason Mraz tops them all. "I'm Yours" is on course to become the 2nd pre-2010 track to pass 1B plays (after "Bohemian Rhapsody").
Beyoncé and Linkin Park both have 2 entries. Linkin Park's "Numb" would actually be #1, if the "Numb / Encore" mash-up with Jay Z was added for a total of 1093.8M plays.

18 GUNS N ROSES – Sweet Child O Mine – 720.3M
19 AHA – Take On Me – 709.5M
20 EARTH, WIND & FIRE – September – 686.1M
Almost half (9) of the tracks are from the 00s. Incl. 7 of the top 11. Makes sense as they were still pretty recent when Spotify started.
But interestingly there are 5 tracks from the 80s and 3 from the 70s. But also just 3 from the 90s!
The 80s almost made it 6 (and Queen almost 4) as "Under Pressure" is #21 with 679.4M
Here are the 20 tracks of the past two moths (00s not included - I have no details):
1 Queen - Bohemian Rhapsody - 58.4M
2 Queen - Don't Stop Me Now - 42.6M
3 Queen - Another One Bites the Dust - 38.8M
4 The Police - Every Breath You Take - 37.9M
5 Oasis - Wonderwall - 36.9M
6 Queen - Under Pressure - 36.8M
7 Journey - Don't Stop Believin' - 35.8M
8 Aha - Take On Me - 35.8M
9 Eagles - Hotel California - 35.2M
10 Toto - Africa - 35.1M
11 Guns n' Roses - Sweet Child O' Mine - 34.8M
12 Nirvana - Smells Like Teen Spirit - 32.5M
13 Bon Jovi - Living On A Prayer - 32.4M
14 Backstreet Boys - I Want It That Way - 32.1M
15 AC/DC - Highway to Hell - 31.3M
16 AC/DC - Back in Black - 30.9M
17 Queen - We Will Rock You You - 28.7M
18 AC/DC - Thunderstruck - 28.6M
19 Earth, Wind & Fire - September - 28.6M
20 Radiohead - Creep - 27.9M
6 from the 70s, 9 from the 80s and just 5 from the 90s. Too bad I don't have the info for the 00s. Would be interesting to compare.
The mighty Queen still have the top 3 on that list, but the rest are closing in, while "We Will Rock You" is falling (was #14 on a similar list I made in January) and "I Want To Break Free" (24.3M) is no longer in the "biggest gains" top 20.
Thanks 😉
Note that, out of the 9 songs from the 00s, only 2 of them were released after 2005 (Halo and Viva La Vida, both from 2008) which to me indicates that we're talking about truly classic songs here, as opposed to songs that benefited from being released just before Spotify or something, which is what you seem to imply 😉
"I'm Yours" was also a 2008 hit and a 2009 Grammy nominee. But I see your point. And yes, they certainly are classics. It will be interesting to see how their recent plays compare against older classics in my next update.
I might even argue that late 90s tracks initially benefitted some when Spotify started too. That effect has now weakened, hence just one track from the late 90s appear on the "recent plays" list above. And that one (I Want It That Way - 32.1M) is riding on the DNA album/tour. The four other 90s tracks on the list are from 1990-95.
The other big late 90s tracks "Californication", "Iris", "All Star" and "Still D.R.E." are all absent from the list, due to recent plays in the 22.4M-24.5M range. In fact, among the overall top 30 pre-2000 tracks these 4 songs are in the bottom 5 when it comes to recent plays (along with Bob Marley's "Is This Love" - obviously Mariah's Xmas song excluded).
Oh that's right, I'm Yours was released in 2005 but only became famous in 2008.

If Journey is any indication, the 00s songs seem to be holding their own. Maroon 5's song had 51m streams in the last 3 months (Journey's song had 47m).
