Depending how you view HIGA & CRITR, it would probably just miss out on the list, given that The Purple Rain figure is from a few days ago and that it probably gains at a faster pace.
Great countdown of the 80s albums. Not too surprised to see Thriller at the Top. Talking about MJ, I'm kind of looking forward to seeing where Dangerous will land in the 90s list. I think that Nirvana's Nevermind will top that one. Metallica's self-titled will be strong too.
appetite for destruction could have been an even greater success than Back in Black and Led Zeppelin IV if Axl wasnt such a prick
Hi MJD!
Thank you! That's very very interesting, streaming is still new but I wonder how we might see artists' CSPC totals change as it continues to grow.
Yes, you'd imagine Nevermind will top the list but I'd also imagine albums like, Californication, 2001 and Whats The Story Morning Glory will all be up there.
I doubt Dangerous will trouble the higher reaches of the list, quite a few 1990's tracks like Under the Bridge, Smells Like Teen Spirit, Wonderwall and Californication (song), as well a a few others, have probably streamed around the same or more than what Dangerous has in total.
As expected, MJ's two blockbuster albums would be here. He's doing well in streaming era. On his YT official channel with 6+B views.. not bad at all. I read somewhere his Dangerous album is 260m streaming. Not sure... Can't remember well. Maybe it won't make in to 1990s list. Regardless, I'm still happy with his streaming numbers.
For 1990s, since it's for sure Nirvana - Nevermind will be on the lost for sure. And Oasis album with Wonderwall on it.
For female, probably Mariah's Christmas album? Yeah we know AIWFCIY is still a big hit today. And The Bodyguard album maybe....
Honestly, I feel that general people don't care about what critics say or about selling numbers/chart and stuff. If they can enjoy the song, then that's it.
Wait... Off The Wall, Thriller and Bad were critically acclaimed albums tho? I think critics were more harsh on his personal life, not really his music, per-say. Especially during the late 70's - 80's. I feel like they were unfair during his 90's career tho. HIStory is great, idc.
Do you only you use Spotify as your base? Ever looked at Last Fm for rankings? Is it true Madonna Celebration Album has 500 million streams?I still think streams and youtube views can be cheated and not give the true story. How many streams did Michael Jackson and Whitney Houston gain after their deaths?
Hi Mee!
No, all CSPC articles include YouTube views too. These articles are done because Spotify celebrated recently its 10th birthday, which is why they are listing their numbers. About Last FM, it's not true at all. You can check her numbers, the highest track is on 600k. Also, Last FM is an internet radio, it isn't a real streaming service.
As for Jackson / Houston boosts, the one of the former was very minimal since streams were truly low in 2009, the platform was only getting its first users (launched in late 2008), it was only available in Sweden, Finland, France, Norway, Spain, and the UK. The service opened in the US in July 2011. Even by 2012 when Houston passed away, numbers were still ridiculously low. The very top catalog hits were up to 10 million-ish streams, while the same songs are now on 500+ million. So even if the boost was proportionally big back then, it's impact on up to date numbers is minimal since the service grew so much more afterwards.
Hi Stephon!
Their reception was mostly OK but nothing close to a critical acclaim. The Rolling Stone for example said that Thriller was "a step forward" to come closer to Prince's 1999. They also stated the album had multiple forgettable fillers, including P.Y.T. Most critics came to get positive as time proved these records to be massively influential / important.
I meant Celebration Album streams on Spotify and sorry i know this has nothing to do with the highest streamed Albums of the 80's on spotify.
Off the Wall was critically acclaimed right? And Thriller seemed to be more than Ok.
Streaming figures are the purest & truest form of measuring popularity there is. There is no doubt in the equation, like there is when trying to accurately evaluate sales figures, the number of streams is there in black and white (well technically in white, on a black background) beside each track. Why don't you add them up yourself, as you will come to exactly the same totals for Madonna as he has or anyone would.
Hi Michael!
Yes, they did. Here too they grew afterwards, at least in 2009 since in 2012 views were already getting big. But as usual with streams, they grew so much lately and represent such a sheer volume of people listening to music over time that they are way less impacted by these temporary increases. Passings also tend to have a higher impact on sales since a lot of physical units are also shipped and since people who love the artist feel the need to pay tribute by purchasing something.
Hi Stephon!
Well, it always depends on where you set the 'critical acclaim' bar. Reviews were good, especially since critics weren't necessarily expecting much from a new Michael Jackson album at that point, so that was a positive surprise. But then, Rolling Stone put it on par with Earth Wind & Fire's I Am, and NME hasn't even put it among their annual Top 40 best albums list (the former was). So while most comments were good, it was hardly received with the "life changing", "revolutionary", "among all-time greats" type comments often read on reviews of many rock albums.
Hi false Dan!
How on earth a list based on 100% verifiable facts can depend on "hate" or whatever?
Hi MJD,
But Iron Maiden with 16 albums in assets compared to Metallica at least 80 million physical copies must have sold them.
Didn’t Glee help Don’t Stop Believin’ be huge nowadays too? It started entering the UK charts more often when Glee premiered, I believe!
