It seems to me like many view her more as an icon than a musican, and that's not meant in any negative way.
I know more people would jam out to Bohemian Rhapsody than any Madonna song, yeah she's well known but she's not really "in with the kids" kinda like Justin Bieber's Baby, sure everyone knows it but who the heck still listens to it.
Maybe not the most bright comparison but I hope you get the point. I really don't have anything against her, in fact I enjoy a couple of her albums.
And bringing up face recognition is not really fair since they're a band. But I need to point out Freddie Mercury's pose have been all over the internet for a decade now. It have also become some sort of icon if you ask me.
Well they may only know Freddie, but at least every 9 year old will know the beat of We Will Rock You, and this is a fact, (i’m from Latin America in case you don’t know) if you want to I can go to my old primary and do a survey of how many kids know Queen/Queen songs and how many know Madonna/Madonna songs. I don’t talk about adults because all of them know both bruh.
I would also say that Freddie is one of the most iconic frontman lead singer anywhere and that he is the biggest gay icon as well ever. The difference is Queens music is so much greater , though like AL I still like a couple of her albums.
Madonna was bigger in the 80s and 90s. Madonna is global, she outsold Queen in South America, Asia and Oceania. Queen outsold her in Europe.
Europe is not the whole world.
May be Madonna fans should look at the ASR on this site. Forget about her being bigger here or there. Queen are bigger overall.

Who says that communism was just in Europe? It was present in a part of Asia also. And if Madonna is “more famous” than Queen now, she would have more streams than them bruh. (Streaming is the 80% of sales produced all over the world in its different formats in 2019).

Like literally all the kids/teens know a Queen song or them, but it is not the same case with Madonna. Bohemian Rhapsody made a legacy with younger people, something that Madonna hasn’t done. Yes, Madonna is MADONNA, but she is not building a legacy as Queen does. Madonna is historically bigger but Queen is now more popular, and both things are facts.

Yes, Queen were doing exceptionally well before the movie, as mentioned on this very website back in 2017 - even if Madonna released another album Queen would still be overtaken her (that was long before the movie). And ... it happened. Queen overtook Madonna.

It was the movie that made it possible for Queen to obtain a higher eas than Madonna so please don't make it sound like it was Queen's doing.
No matter what they did, they didn't reach as high as Madonna's success. It was the movie that boosted millions of sales for the Queen. Queen released albums, did tours, etc but were never huge. But Madonna made records and has longevity.
