Taylor has like 15 career releases, Sinatra has over 2,200, two pretty different figures for two incredible but vastly different careers. If anything to me Sinatras insane compilation and live releases spam almost reminds me of how Indian musicians pump out hundreds of songs a year, but I guess you only have the knowledge of the industry to be angry and bitter.

Btw, I'm kinda pleased that "My Way" came out on top as his definitive song in this analysis. It was always the song I associated the most with Sinatra. And then maybe "Strangers in the Night" and "New York, New York".
It puzzled me that "Fly Me to the Moon" is his top song on Spotify, a classic for sure, but it was never his signature song in my mind.
Could this be a regional thing? Was "Fly Me to the Moon" perhaps bigger stateside than in Europe?

I would have thought "Let it Snow" was in his top 25 CSPC singles.

Damn. 229 million records is so insane. Especially since he debut in the 40s.

I can't imagine the amount of work it took to put into this. I can't wait for you to do The Supremes and Diana Ross.

I also wonder if Bing Crosby sold more records than Elvis and Michael. This will be interesting.

Thanks.

Are these only the certain data or are potential ones certified by IFPI or Guinness World Records also added?

Amazing article. What's so interesting in the analysis of older artists from the 40s-50s, like Sinatra and Elvis, is how the traditional studio album just doesn't account for the majority of the artist's sales. Like MJD stated in the article, it's kind of ironic that we've arrived at the point in the music industry again. The digital era brought singles to the forefront, and now the streaming era as made rapid releases of singles even more common. I remember reading arguments for the past ten years about who's an "album artist" and who's a "singles artist", but at the end of the day it just doesn't matter. Sales are sales and we are currently in the era of the streaming juggernauts like Bad Bunny and I find it more interesting than ever.

Streams have to accumulate over time, which means interest in an album has to be maintained over time in order to attain big sales, which one can argue might be more impressive than the instant sale of someone picking up an album at a music store. I used to buy a ton of CDs that I barely ever listened to. Either because they were one-hit wonders, or because they were just on sale for super cheap and I bought them and forgot about them. But those artists got a full 'album sale' from me. Now, an album actually has to be good and hold my interest in order for the artist to get the 1500 streams from me that equate to 1 sale.

This is crazy! Even his labels won't audit his sales like that

The thing with FS is that despite over 249 charted singles and over 90 Billboard as well singles he introduced a few hundred classics written for him in movies and hundreds more that were written for albums by legendary writers that were never singles but are historic classics.Perfect example being the first year of the Grammys (after 2 of his 3( or 4) career peaks 20 yrs after 1st recording and 29 yrs after he started sing , he was up for best vocal for Come Fly With Me (& Witchcraft ) and yet a novelty tune by Perry Como ( Catch A Falling Star) won over his split vote. They are history and currently being recorded by scores of legends and newer artists in FS tribute albums still while the Como song is forgotten! The same year he had 2 albums up for Album of the year but again the votes were split & the winner now forgotten. Also everything he sang became a standard on an album while not being singles. From 1960 thru 1967 he did win that Album category 3 times ( with Jobim album losing to Beatles after he beat them twice. What’s even more amazing is the concert career from post 2 year retirement 74-94(2150 shows including a world record concert in Rio(1980)& 60-180 concerts a year for 2 million average each one .

Then there is the 67 film career with 3 Oscars; ; thousands of radio shows live and hundreds of tv shows and annual special plus the civil rights pioneer and humanitarian much of which was anonymous until after his passing. If you span the number of humans he touched and brought joy to from the 1930’s to this day , it’s likely the most of any human ever & in the 10’s of billions and many more into infinity as we know it. His family being secretive about official auditing and the lack of charts thru his early career ( especially international) makes an accurate count impossible. What about Columbia House in USA and cassettes ; 8 track etc.. ( albums rereleased many times and remastered multiple times)add to the difficulty but make MJD ‘s work staggeringly impressive.💎💜
