Thanks for the reply. Sorry for posting in the wrong area, didn't know if you'd see it if it was posted here.
Drake is improving, breaking and setting new records in the US Billboard Hot 100 history/achievements/milestones in the most awesome way! 🙂
Well done, I really like the new format! It's a lot easier to read.
So Drake has improved his total streaming figures by about 16 million EAS in the time between this article and his Streaming Masters one (about 60 weeks, so over 260,000 EAS per week!). Beyond being massive it's also higher than any of his albums has earned individually in their entire run to date, and Scorpion accounts for "only" around 28% of that. Even if he were to retire or fall off today, who knows how much more his total will grow just from catalogue streams.
Another update on him would be interesting but I imagine streaming already shows the majority of his increase.
I'm not sure if this is easily answerable, but if we compare this to the physical era, how common was it for an act to sell a comparable number of units of their catalogue within a year or so?
Hi Orange!
I'm not sure what we should consider as catalog for Drake since More Life is from last year and even Views was less than 2 years old when it achieved most of these 'new' streams. Anyway to give an idea, AC/DC sold 6 million back catalog albums during the year 2008 which was very good for them with their hyped comeback. The Beatles used to sell 2/2,5 million albums per year in weak 70s years in the US alone. Adele's 19 sold over 3 million in 2011. In mid-90s Metallica were selling many millions every year too, same for Dire Straits in the 80s, U2 in 1987, Pink Floyd in 1994, etc. So while selling 6-8 million catalog albums in a year wasn't easy, most acts that got massive with a large back catalog available did it.
While it's usually irrelevant, the slightly better Spotify-comprehensive streams from the last IFPI report (gives results about 7% higher) are worth mentioning for Drake as they mean about 1,4 million of the increase are due to that. Then there is Scorpion / More Life numbers to remove (6 million between them) as well as new orphan songs (2,3 million), there is *only* 6 million plus sales from back catalog and that includes Views. Thus I would say its absolutely comparable with results obtained during the physical era by artists getting a similar love from the general public and with various catalog albums available!
Thank you for the explanation MJD! Yes, I was thinking of his older albums so I should have specified that.
I can't imagine an update would add any great amounts to his current (90m) total, considering his streams are updated daily within the Artist Ranking - Total CSPC - Overall Sales list and streaming is where he obviously get's the vast majority of his "sales" from
yes, i get that and he probably shouldn’t be priority but it would be interesting to see an exact figure on the sales views and scorpion
Hi Martin , does that mean we won’t get an update for his page ?? because a lot of stuff from this article is outdated from around 2017
OMG he is a beast and was a visionary. Moved to streaming at right time and became a global star and all the millions he earns from streaming. The catalog he created in a decade gonna pay him for decades.
