"You're making me High" was not on the Waiting to Exhale soundtrack. Toni's song was called "Let it Flow" and barely charted. This thread is a mess. lol

The 'Whitney' album has finally gone diamond! The first African American artist to ever have 3 diamond albums in the US

MJD, If Waiting To Exhale Soundtrack wasn't included in Whitney's Albums, can you still have study on it at least?

They're just now shown in the breakdown but they are taken into account. Africa + Middle Eastern sales should be around 1.6m

So... I have a question

Using the album “Whitney” for exemple (and I can use any of Whitney’s albums):

According to you, it has sold 19.8M copies with detailed data from ONLY 15 countries (shifting almost 17.9M copies alone) and 2M in the others countries - not reported in the article.

But according to you, in those SAME 15 countries, “Oops I Did It Again” by Britney Spears has sold 15.689M copies. And you guys are telling me that this album sold 19.3M copies WW, so it has to have more 3.7M sold besides those 15 countries: almost 2x MORE than the sales ya’ll reported for “Whitney”, wich was a WAY more successful album (sales from those 15 countries alone proves it).

Britney article;
https://chartmasters.org/2019/04/britney-spears-albums-and-songs-sales/

So how can you explain me that a album that was way more successful worldwide has sold almost 2x less besides those 15 countries? It literally makes 0 sense.

In conclusion, I have 2 theories:

1. You guys are inflating Britney Spears sales (?)
2. You guys are decreasing the sales from other artists (?)

I really would like to hear a explanation bc I think there’s none....

Hi Work!

There is a very simple explanation: you are comparing a 1987 album with a 2000 album. I hope you understand that while markets like the US, the UK, Germany, etc were already healthy by 1987, sales of international products in many Latin American and Asian markets were close to null until they exploded during the 90s. Do you know that in Hong Kong, Taiwan, Singapore and likely several more Asian markets (we simply have no data), History outsold Thriller? I don't even need to tell you that there are no possible comparison in the panel of 15 countries you used.

Also, why do you claim that Whitney was "way more successful worldwide" than Oops? This is just a lie. Both have been similarly successful globally, and if we focus in Asia and Latin America for example, it's clear that a teen pop artist formerly at Disney (the two main international sellers there) did better than a black Pop-R&B singer (which were notably weak in many LA markets).

By the way, outside of these 15 markets Whitney records 19% more YouTube views than inside them. Britney records 59% more YouTube views outside of the 15 countries than inside. Thus, even without factoring in the massively different market background, Britney is indeed much bigger in the remaining countries.

It's always better to check facts that basing your messages on bias or bias suspicions!

By judging the fact that “Whitney” sold 2.2M+ copies over Oops I Did It Again in those same exact 15 countries, the fact that I question the sales beyond them should not impress you that much, because it just simply makes sense. We clearly know that it has not sold only 1.9 million copies in the rest of the world as you estimate. That’s actually a pretty low estimation.

And although it’s a 80's album, I saw this happening in the article by artists who recently debuted also...

Like Rihanna for example:

what about “Good Girl Gone Bad”? It’s a 2007 album and you detailed the sales from only 17 countries (bringing 8.1M copies and according to the article, only 800k sold in the rest of the world, wich clearly is unbiased).

While comparing to a completely flop album like “Blackout” you have detailed the sales from 43 countries

How can you explain me that?! Or are you saying that Blackout was more successful than Good Girl Gone Bad besides those 17 countries like you are saying that Oops sold 2M more than Whitney even though it sold 2.2M less considering the same reported countries for both?
