If you want to know about sales in the US market, you would look to Cashbox Magazine (not Billboard), they were a sales based Magazine 1942 -1996. Houston's debut album was the top album for 1986. Her sophomore album was 6th for 1987 behind Bon Jovi, U2, Whitesnake, Paul Simon & Beastie Boys.
Uhm no. The real queen of pop is Madonna. She outsold her by almost 100 million equivalent album sales, you cant say Whitney is the queen of pop when shes trailing Madonna by almost 100 million EAS. This is not to mention the cultural impact she left. Most of the pop music we have these days are influenced by her musical styles, especially during the late 90s when she started the EDM trend. So no Whitney ials not the queen of pop.
Yes, she rather called as Queen Of Pop, but Madonna is also a "Lip-syncer", when it comes to vocal perfection and control ,Whitney is The Best Female Singer, when you ask someone who is vocally singer , they definitely say that Whitney influence them definitely!, even Madonna cant match her best selling and most successful female album and single of all time. And the legacy that will never be forgotten, Of THE VOICE, Whitney Houston
You are on the wrong website ULTIMATE MASTER. It is all about sales here and got nothing to do with talent. Plus Madonna does not lip-,synch 90% of the time. Look at all of hrr live performamces. Many times she was out of breath during performances bcoz she was dancing and singing. As far as having the biggest album ever by a female. Who cares. At the end its the total that matters, not just one truly big era. If we want to make that as a case then I guess Alannis Morissrette or Shania Twain are bigger than Madonna or Mariah Carey. Obviously Jagged Little Pill and Come On Over are bigger seller than all of Madonna or Mariah Carey studio albums. But again to say Alannis or Shania Twain is a bigger artists than Madonna or Mariah is a joke and the same applies to Whitney. Thats why we shouldnt go for peakd, we should go for total records sold. In which Whitney wasnt in Madonna's league. Look I love Whitney Houston just as much as I love Madonna and I honestly cant choose between them. But to say Whitney was the queen of pop when she wasnt. Is totally WRONG.
Whitney is definitely in Madonna's league stats wise. You dont get seven consecutive number ones and win AOTY and not be.
No trailblazer? She very much did open a path for plenty of singers after her how can you make such a claim?
Im not saying Whitney at her peak wasnt in Madonna's league. She was and she definitely was way bigger during tje bodyguard era. But Madonna never stopped working, Whitney did. As a result shes trailing almost 100 million behind Madonna. You cant say someone who is trailing another person by 100 million as in the same league. Madonna was just one level above any other female singers. Thats the truth.
MJD, would please update Whitney Houston's Catalog especially she has a recently a hit single, etc😊😎
Whitney's 7 consecutive #1s were bought and paid for by Arista Records, the were not organic. The Billboard charts at the time leaning more on airplay than sales (that continued into the 90s). Madonna had 17 top 10 singles, 16 top 5 singles and 7 #1 singles, 4 of those singles were gold (million sellers) in the 80's. Whitney had 7 #1s, 9 top 5 singles. 10 top 10 singles (one gold single) in the 80s. Madonna was the #2 artist of the American Top 40 in the 1980s, she was also the #2 artist worldwide on the charts in the 80s. Houston was not in the top 12 in the US or Worldwide. I don't understand how you think she in Madonna league ? She was far more successful in the 90s.
Andrew Dee...Whitney a megastar in movies ? Read wikipedia much ? She was in one hit movie, with Kevin Costner who was arguably the biggest movie star on the planet at the time. It was his movie, she can take responsibility for the soundtrack. But there is no discounting Kevin at the time, he was a box office draw. It wasn't a very good movie, although it made money, it earned a record amount of Razzie nominations. Her 2 subsequent movies The Preachers Wife bombed; Waiting to Exhale was a moderate success at best, and featured award winning actresses Angela Bassett & Loretta Devine. Houston held up production, costing them more. I think we need some really here. Madonna actually won 2 Golden Globes for Evita, Best Actress and Best Original Song, the movie itself took the award for best musical/comedy.
i'm sorry, but the fact you think whitney wasn't as sucssuful as madonna in the 80's dosen't mean she didn't desarve no 1#s she earened in the 80's. as chartmaster said, she was actually a great physical saller, and has sold almost 50 million physical singels.
some of her singles actually suvived the test of time good: i wanna dance with sombody is doing good on youtube and is huge on spotify, i will i know also does well there and there are more examples(some of the song are indeed forgotten, but trust me, almost every artists has some including some of madonna's singles from 80's).
more than that, if her hits "were bought" how do you explain the gigantic secssus of both her 80's albums in the usa(whitney houston is 13 platnium, was the album of the year and charted for 4 years in a rew in the yec. whitney was 9 platinium and spent 11 weeks on the top of the charts)?
Higher love sold more than 2 million in 2019.. it is still in UK chart on it's 47th week. Her Ultimate album is in the top 40 again in UK after what 7- 8 yrs in the chart? it is gonna be 6x platinum in us soon, Whitney's second album will be diamond in US soon, I read somewhere only less than 50k needed to be certified 10x platinum . and her first album is almost 14x olatinum if that happens, whitney will have 3 diamond albums. This is from world music 1994 award whitney was the biggest selling female singer in the era, of course a lot of things have happened after that. I read somewhere up until year 2001. Whitney was the biggest selling single of all time but then again she kinda stopped making music. I am happy that her catalogs are always a big seller up to now. You can still see in them in the charts.
Her appeal in Europe surprises me. 40 million albums sold there is very impressive. Even during her most R&B era "My Love Is Your Love," that album sold an impressive 4 million copies in Europe.
Her latest hit "Higher Love" did best in Europe and was a true hit for her. Europeans have stayed loyal to Whitney no matter what.
