They definitely didnt overworked a lot more than anybody during that era. I mean Britney released 3 albums in less than 3 years, went on for 3 world tour, released a Barbie Doll, Playstation game, book, etc. Compared to Spice Girls who released 3 albums in 4 years. Spears performed 282 concert dates from her 1999-2004 while Spice Girls performed 105 dates. So obviously Britney was far busier and far more over worked. Backstreet Boys released 4 albums from 96 - 00. Doing non stop promotions, went on 3 world tour performed at a total of 356 concert dates (almost 3.5 times more dates), etc. Again obviously harder worker than Spice Girls. Even if Spice Girls continue to sing together there is no way they can reach Mariah level. Boy Band, Girl Band have very limited time in the music industry. Hard for people to connect to them once their fanbase are not teenagers anymore. Looj at Backstreet Boys their sales are so low since the mid 00s. So its highly impossible they could ever reboubd strongly.
I'm sure once their numbers are re-worked, they'll pass DC again as the top selling Girl Group of the last 30 years.
…Baby One More Time was #1 in 33 WW charts, including 4 Year-End charts — including the UK. Go to Wikipedia and check the Charts, count them directly: 29 #1s on the Weekly Charts, and 4 #1s on the Year-End formats.
Wannabe and BOMT are literally equal when it comes to smash singles. Wannabe has less YouTube views, but has more Spotify streams, and their totals are very close when combining both streaming.
The Spice Girls 2nd album I think is actually higher than displayed here and should be close to Britney’s 2nd album.
Plus they had a hugely successful tour in 2019, even though it was only in UK & Ireland. And it became the biggest girl group tour of all time with $78 M off just 13 shows! That’s literally $6 M per show! Not even adjusted for inflation.
If they did 50 shows with the same average, it would be $300 M.
Biggest girl group film: Spice World > $100 M box office.
Biggest girl group single sales: Wannabe
Biggest girl group single streams: Wannabe
Biggest girl group tour: The Spice Girls - 2019 Tour $78 M
I disagree only Bc the Spice Girls were simultaneously doing a film while recording their 2nd album.
They were also doing solo projects after Geri left, before their third album, scoring #1s along the way.
We cannot just focus on the group music work, but all work (solo, film, etc). from 1996-2000.
Their promotions like the Pepsi deal were huge. BSB never had promotional deals on the scale of the Spice Girls, girls can market more than boys: food like soda is genderless, but Spice Girls we’re able to market clothes, hair and skincare products that boys back then never sold (pre-ProActive acne products and others that hired anyone in the 2000’s-2010’s).
Britney outdid the Spice Girls as she obviously worked harder Bc she was a solo act so she had to do it herself and couldn’t share the burden with bandmates.
She famously admitted on Oprah she does 1,000 sit-ups a day!
Were these included in the article? If not, can these and any other music club sales WW (I.e. USA) get added?
Sales are sales, and they deserve full-inclusion if these articles want to be totally complete and up-to-date.
Also, interesting how the album was still get shipments 1 decade after release. Small, but showed a level of enduring popularity since the music club itself was dying, yet shipments were still being made up until the final year.
Hi Trumru, yes club sales are already taken into account and included in all totals. Also, certifications such as those from the RIAA (US) and BPI (UK) always included music club sales, as the certifications were for all copies shipped by a record company, not just for shipments/sales to retail.
Here are it's UK shipments to retail, from release until 2006
1996 --- 1,530,655
1997 --- 1,518,676
1998 --- 66,282
1999 --- 7,921
2000 --- 14,263
2001 --- 962
2002 --- 802
2003 --- 0
2004 --- 2,292
2005 --- 3,584
2006 --- 889
TOTAL --- 3,146,326
