Some of her fans in Ukmix say that:
"That would be a weird theory to think that Janet Jackson (Billboard's 2nd most successful act of the 1990s) didn't sell anything at Columbia House. His logic just isn't true at all!
And then he also went on to say that "Design of a Decade" was fairly expensive at Columbia? It was featured in all of their ads for buy 12 for 1 even in 2002! https://books.google.com/books?id=APMDA ... 22&f=false
1997: https://books.google.com/books?id=aV4EA ... 22&f=false
1999 as well for Columbia House - https://books.google.com/books?id=YG5Yu ... 22&f=false"
"He said record clubs vanished by 1997, yet Columbia House was promoting Design of A Decade up til 2002 (the latest I found). Could have been even later. Columbia House Music Club and BMG merged in 2005. http://www.slate.com/blogs/browbeat/201 ... ut_of.html
Columbia House carried all of Janet's album. According to him he is making it sound like it was impossible for Columbia House to sell a single Janet album despite all of the ads that ALWAYS feature her albums!"
"In 2005 "All for You" was still being sold and promoted as well. So his Virgin theory is wrong as well. https://books.google.com/books?id=DTBLA ... BDoAQhAMAY"
What would you say for the Columbia House informations that they have?!
Hi Marcus!
It seems her fans aren't aware of Janet Jackson's discography 😉
Her first big albums and the compilation covering them - Design of a Decade - were A&M albums. I carefully explained with various Billboard links how Virgin moved away from Clubs in mid-90s, e.g. the record label of Janet from her 'Janet.' 1993 album.
The UKmix thread covering the history of the Columbia House was opened by myself 10 years ago, I really doubt I need enlightenment on that. ALL albums were eligible for the 12 for 1 offer for new subscriptions, this has nothing to do with the price of a record and barely proves being putting out such cheap arguments don't know a thing about this subject. You can check the catalog listing from the thread I just linked to see that
1) only A&M albums were available
2) Design of a Decade price was $16.98, way higher than its retail price
Contradicting that clubs vanished from the end of the 90s is a lack of knowledge. They were already only 7,9% of the market by 1999 and 4,0% by 2002. That percentage isn't related to one club but all of them combined. By 2002, Design of a Decade was moving roughly 50,000 units a year, how much her fanatics would expect it to sell on Columbia, a Club on its way to be eaten by BMG as it was bleeding like hell?
I don't think giving much weight to fanatic trolls like Bojan (and all his additional accounts to confirm his own comments) is worth it though. It is known for long how ignorant he is and much he can't care less about facts. He is as blind as one might be. No matter how much wishful thinking one puts into it, facts remain what they are.
Thank you fot the answer. I think you're completely right, especially about fanatic trolls. 😀
Janet Jackson as far as I knew was a big TOURING act, like tina turner was and beyonce is now. She didnt have a universal pop sound like whitney, mariah and celine had that would attract an old audience. To me, she was a r&b superstar, not a pop singer like the media would promote her. Her music has a heavy focus on rhythm and beats because she is a DANCER who sings, not a serious singer. Anyway I think back in the day she reportedly got a contract from for $80 million but im sure that contract included touring revenue and movies. That figure couldnt have been from album sales. Here are some touring receipts :

The pop star said Madonna's "Sex" is "a horrible book. She didn't even sell that many albums. Her last album sold 2 million. They shipped it, but it got shipped back," Jackson said.
https://www.highbeam.com/doc/1P2-8226538.html
Janet Jackson really used to think she sold THAT many albums, so she confidently dissed Madonna's album sales. 😀
Um Billboard even stated way back in 1997 that "Control" and "Rhythm Nation" both sold 14 million and the "janet." album sold over 20 million. The Velvet Rope sold 10 million worldwide also. We'll believe Billboard over you. That's almost 60 million from just 4 albums and Sales haven't been updated since. For you to say her being at 90 million or even 100 million isn't possible is absurd. Mind you her BMG catalog sales aren't even being included. Mariah's "Music Box" and "Daydream" albums have only sold over 7 million in the U.S. but they are certified Diamond which means 10 million. Janet is way undercertified. Take that into consideration before you start talking about inflated sales.
JJ fans are always consistent in disbelieving Madonna's stats just to 'validate' their idol's success. In spite of all factual cases, they remain delusional.
So pathetic.
She had a nice little peak in Europe from 1993-1998. 7 million albums sold in about 5 year is respectable for a black women releasing RnB albums. Look at how Mariah's Butterfly faired in Europe.
Had TVR performed similarly to janet. in Germany and the UK it may of passed 3 million sales on the continent. She should of made a remix for it like Janet - Remixed.
I have a few questions
1. I see from previous comments that you combined janet. and Janet. Remixed to get the total European and Asain sales of 2,330,000 and 1,025,000. Do you know how much the Remix album sold by itself? Ive seen estimates around 750,000 before.
2. I see you have Control the remixes at 150,000 sales. Does the remix album count for Controls european sales of 1,080,000 like you did for Janet. Remixes?
3. How much did Together again sell in Europe alone?
Sales in the U.S. (Nielsen Music) / Worldwide sales (ChartMasters)
“Rhythm Nation,” 238,742 / 250,000
“When I Think of You,” 230,118 / 200,000
“All Nite (Don’t Stop),” 218,916 / 250,000
“Love Will Never Do (Without You),” 207,479 / 150,000
“Black Cat,” 151,309 / 100,000
“Control,” 141,991 / 125,000
“The Pleasure Principle,” 128,459 / 125,000
“Come Back to Me,” 109,210 / 100,000
“Runaway,” 256,666 / Remaining tracks (this includes "Runaway," "Diamonds," Make Me," "The Best Things In Life Are Free," "Twenty Foreplay," "Girlfriend/Boyfriend" etc.) 300,000
"BurnitUp!," 78,935 / Remaining tracks from "Unbreakable" including "BurnitUp!" – 50,000
Hi Unbreakable!
As it stands I'll be unable to fix these figures if there is no additional information. While these numbers are valid, they would conclude on inflated sales overall. The well-known troll who posted them cherry-picked all numbers that were the most favorable to Janet to suggest figures were deflated. Truth is, all figures for downloads of off the radar singles are estimated by dispatching known career totals. Basically, it's a dispatching game, sales are assigned into each song as per their ranking on iTunes. Since these sales are more or less linear through the years, the ballpark from the dispatching will be correct (as seen in these numbers you post). Depending on when you look at iTunes / Livepopbars, some songs could be allocated a bit too many sales, others a bit too few. Cherry picking only the ones estimated in the low side, apart from demonstrating an unlimited bias and a disrespect of accuracy, will barely distort the reality and inflate the overall total!
The same happens to be true for compilations. The evolution of soundscan sales of an artist is known more often than not, so it's easy to do estimations. Then, many artists like Janet have multiple similar compilations. Depending on their price / sales, one or another will do well time to time. The dispatching of annual soundscan sales into compilations that sell off the radar is tricky, some may end up deflated, others inflated. The total is fine though. Fixing only the ones that haven't got allocated enough sales would fix 1/2 record, but corrupt the career total. That's the issue with biased people: even when they share accurate data, they present it in a faked way.
Obviously, if comprehensive leaks are shared, figures will be adjusted accordingly!
How is this list done cause it seems inaccurate as heck. Janet's best selling single is Together Again, sitting at 6+ million copies sold. How in the world did you come up with 3+ million?
Hi Tonk!
The question is how you come with 6 million 😉 that's a figure only reached by the very biggest hits of all-time, Together Again did already extraordinary at 3,2 million. Physical singles were really a thing in only 4 markets back then (US, UK, Germany, France, then Japan but it's a different story for foreign hits).
From official certifications, and UNAiDs Outlook Report from 2010. It is the only Janet song that has sold 10 million copies, and commercially her biggest selling single ever. You can wikipedia it, and check the sources of those claims. I did and they're solid. All official sources from France to US.
So, I'm afraid your calculations are way off.
Sorry that's 6 million +. And Together Again is one of the biggest selling songs ever...
It's funny how you claim that 6 million + as a crying kid, but can not relate how the single sold it. Can you be reasonable?
Great Job!
When can you do Paul McCartney or John Lennon CSPC? I'm really interested to see how commercially successful they were in their solo careers.
I don't recall crying. I'm simply stating the facts and the sources. It is her most popular single commercially. I'm just not a big fan of inaccurate numbers.

And fyi it is also the most streamed and watched Janet song on all digital platforms, so there. Facts.
On top of UNAIDS report comfirming TA sales 6 million, official charts com confirms it is Janet's most streamed song.
Billboard confirms Together Again being the most played song of 1999

Meanwhile ARIA charts (global) confirm Together Again being one of the most sold single in 1997 and 1998.

Proof enough?
Hi Tonk!
I'm afraid but official sales figures from bodies like the RIAA, BPI, SNEP, CRIA, IFPI, etc. will never be "way off" because of claims from Wikipedia. Stick to legitimate charts & sales data rather than wild claims which are ridiculously inflated for all artists. If you wanna argue Together Again sold 6 million physical units, feel free to break them down market by market to see by yourself it's just an utopy.
Hi Tonk!
Definitely not, that's not enough a start of a proof. You can copy/paste 100 claims that are themselves weak copy/pastes of fake data, that won't make it true nor accurate nor official. Once again, simply have a look at its sales market by market.
