It's sad. Colldplay is THE last big rock band in existence. Rock & Roll is dead! 🙁

30 years ago, there were saying like this "Rock is dead", but Nirvana came out. So do not worry. Rock is not dead.

It's not dead but it's not as popular as it once was, certainly not as popular as it still was 30 years ago, when rock acts such as Bon Jovi, Springsteen, Guns N Roses, Def Leppard, U2, Aerosmith (and many others), were some of the most popular and successful acts around.

The majority of interest that still exists in rock, seems to be more centered around acts from the past, classic rock acts. Take a look at the UK Rock Charts, available at the OCC, the singes and albums charts are basically just a list of the most popular catalogue rock. Seldom do albums by contemporary acts or even new albums from older artists, hang around in the chart long.

Shes barely adding anything worth of an update. Update Queen, their catalogue must have grown like crazy.

I see that new album hasn't done too well in it's second week on the US Billboard charts. Apparently it has just broken the record, for the biggest fall from #1 , for an album debuting there the previous week, falling out of the Top 100!

True but what is important is that the album at least managed to take the top spot on its first week. 🙂

To Coldplay fans, don't really feel down about their latest album, as they say a "flop" album. It's their 8th album already and not the end their music career either. Eventhough Maroon 5 continues to make hit singles recently but it's still their 6th album and i doubt that Maroon 5 can outsell/outEas Coldplay on their 8th album. I don't think Maroon 5 can beat Coldplay's total EAS at all.

Chill. 🙂

Rock & Roll may not be dead, but it's slowly dying. One rare exception by the older artist who achieved very good chart success with the new/last album, was Roger Waters with "Is This the Life We Really Want? " (2017).

The album peaked at number 3 in the United Kingdom and number 11 on the Billboard album list (USA). Further, album peaked No 1. in the Scotland, Norway, Czech Republic......Italy No2. etc.

"Is This the Life We Really Want? " hang around in the charts pretty long time.

Yes, I suppose that is one thing you can take solace in but I do feel the drop, is the bigger headline, unfortunately. I wonder where it would have placed last week, without the bundle.

Great article MJD! Glad to see an update of Coldplay with the newer format and formulas.
I could be wrong, but I remember that in the original version of this article Viva La Vida had some figures listed for Asian countries other than Japan. Have they been removed here to fit the table's format, or do you now have doubts about the accuracy of those numbers?

With a rumored 2021 follow up being everyday life as a ghost stories without asfos type of song do you think most likely tbey eill have more commercisl appeal to bring em back as a consistent selling band without the need to always be mainstream

Very good article as always! Can you tell us Strawberry Swing and True Love's digital sales on the next update? They were also singles on Viva La Vida and Ghost Stories, so the fans are curious.

Hi Gus it's me Sambuu, strawberry swing and True Love sales are very low. Even despite they're released as single. On viva la Vida era, coldplay's singles success has fallen after Viva la Vida. So Lost and Lovers are less successful as too.

I'm surprised with Everyday Life's pure sales, its unconventional sound + lack of decent promo basically turned the album into a fan-base-carried project, and well... 740k is a good number for 2019-2021 standards in my opinion! Given that Higher Power has been outperforming Orphans on the charts so far and there's a rumored collab with BTS coming, I'm pretty sure LP9 will have better numbers too. Coldplay will never reach the heights of the first seven albums again though, this is their 21st/23rd year of career after all.

Hi Sambuu! I feel like 2-4 million units is the safest bet right now, if LP9 really goes anywhere near Ghost Stories it will be a remarkable comeback!
