Top Spotify albums – Methodology

Before sharing the up todate list of the most streamed studio albums on Spotify, here are a few things you need to know:

Singles that have been issued before the start of the selected period are thus included in full.

In case several versions of the same album exist, the one with the highest total of streams is displayed.

The column EAS stands for Equivalent Album Sales. It reflects the worth of these audio streams on par with album units. This data extrapolates remaining streaming platforms.

The global ranking (g#) is comprehensive for albums over the 500 million mark. Below this number, albums listed are top recent albums or top streamers from local markets, for them the global ranking is meaningless.

HIStory is excluded because the first disc is essentially a greatest hits album full of tracks from his previous albums, and there’s no version on Spotify without it.

But all of these tracks are attributed to other albums (Billie Jean to Thriller…etc.). If you include HIStory, wouldn’t it just show the 2nd disc’s tracks, i.e. 625m streams?

Hi Analord/Clockingbell! This page lists total streams per album ID inside the Spotify database. The only technical manipulation done is that when two tracks appear to have the exact same playcount (it happens when a track and its remix share the same one), only one is kept. As there are no History CD2 available on Spotify, the ID would retrieve total streams for both CDs, which would artificially inflate History’s total. CSPC wise, it’s counted as a box containing 2 albums. Wouldn’t it be a good idea to do the same thing in both cases?

Seeing Nav in the top 10 of the 2022 list is so disappointing… not because he’s a bad artist but because the album really only has 200M streams (shouldn’t be on the list at all) but added a 2 year old song from a various artist compilation tape to boost an extra 1 Billion streams. Take him off?

Hi Aydin!
There are many cases like this, look at Anitta, Ali Gatie etc too.
I see no problem as long as he hasn’t had it on another of his own albums previously.
It will drop down the ranking eventually judging by the daily gains so it won’t be too visible in the long run

Fair, it’ll eventuallly work itself out, however none of those examples are even close to as egregious as Nav adding a song older than his last album cycle. Might as well add your features from 2012 while you’re at it. But I understand the opposing point, its on the record so.

Thanks AI, i’m missing why Ali Gatie’s song It’s You is counted in the 2022 album when it was already included in 2019’s album YOU. Shouldn’t be YOU (2019) in the list instead of WHO HURT YOU (2022)? Thanks

Coldplay’s “Flags” is showing up here as part of Everyday Life due to its Japanese version (https://open.spotify.com/album/7z0efuBXAnPfu60aOL3QFV), but not on the Streaming Tool, is there a way to fix the counting there too? Thank you!

Bad Bunny’s domination is insane. Crazy to think that Un Verano Sin Ti is still doing over 27 million streams daily 165 days after release. It won’t be long before it becomes the most streamed album on the platform. It will also end up with at least six billion plus songs including Callaita. Ed, Drake, Post, Olivia, and Dua maxed out at four and that was with massive radio and promotional push. Then again, I’m sure most artists would be happy to get just one.

I really enjoy Ojitos Lindos, Titi me Pregunto and Me Porto Bonito btw 🙂

It’s not a big call at all if you look at daily streams. He will have the most streamed album on the platform before 1 year anniversary for sure.

Also side note… remains to be seen if taylor’s midnight will serve enough longevity to keep up with bad bunny but her numbers so far are incredible as well.

But you have to account for the law of diminishing returns. it won’t stream 26 million daily for much longer. soon it will slow to around 10 million. it’s too early to say if it has enough steam left to overtake Ed Sheeran’s divide

The album has been out for almost 6 months, it won’t suddenly drop to 10m daily. Bad bunny has also started his stadium tour in all of latin america so expect very stable numbers for a while.

He will overtake divide sooner or later, it’s a matter of when, not if.
