Dua Lipa streaming review – the method

Streaming is made up of audio and video streams. Our CSPC methodology now includes both to better reflect the real popularity of each track. The main source of data for each avenue is respectively Spotify and YouTube.

To factor in the growing impact of multiple Asian countries where these platforms aren’t always the go-to site for music streaming, more sources have been added.

In order to account for their real popularity in each relevant country, the below sources have been used along with the mentioned ratios that reflect the market share of each area.

Audio Streams
– South Korea: Genie streams * 2.20 (consistent with Gaon streaming numbers)
– Japan: AWA streams * 68 / 4 (AWA has 4% of the Japanese streaming market, and 32% are already considered through Spotify’s extrapolation)
– Arabic world: Anghami streams
– Sub-Saharan Africa: Boomplay + Audiomack streams
– Elsewhere: Spotify streams * 649 / 406 (649 million subscribers of global platforms like Spotify, Apple Music, Amazon Music, YouTube Music, Deezer, etc. against 406 million from Spotify itself) + Genie streams * 2.20 (uses Genie rather than Spotify to extrapolate markets like Taiwan, Thailand and Vietnam)

Video Streams
– China* : QQ video streams * 50 if the song is available for audio stream, QQ video streams * 5 elseway (scale built based on known figures for several major artists)
– Elsewhere : Youtube views increased by 10% to account for various local platforms

*since Chinese streaming platforms are mostly video streaming platforms, their streams are weighted on par with YouTube streams.

Audio Stream value – 1,500 plays equal 1 album unit
Video Stream value – 6,750 views equal 1 album unit

Equivalent Albums Sales (EAS) = ( Spotify * 649/406 + Genie * 2.20 * 2 + AWA * 68 / 4 + Anghami + Boomplay + Audiomack ) / 1500 + ( QQ views* 50(or 5) + YouTube * 1.1 ) / 6750

Please be aware that when the artist is regarded as the lead act, he is rewarded with 100% of these units, while featured acts share among them a 50% piece of the totals.

Do you count pandora streams?

Sarah

When are you updating her album sales?

ABJ

Is her debut the most successful album by a female on streaming platforms?

Raffi

Hi ABJ! In order to gauge which female album generated the most EAS from streaming, a calculation of the top albums must be calculated at the same time, and that title may vary from time to time due to difference in catalog streams/ongoing hits. Though I can tell you right now, that thought one of the most successful female albums on streaming platforms, most probably in the Top 5, there are a handful of female albums that are above Dua’s debut. Zara Larsson’s So Good and Rihanna’s Anti both come to mind with both albums approaching 3 billion streams on… Read more »

MJD

Hi ABJ! To be honest it is difficult to answer this question because there is many albums with very similar numbers (My Everything by Ariana, Rihanna’s ANTI, Zara Larsson’s So Good, etc) and checking Spotify & YouTube data for all at the same time is kind of boring. Truth is that it isn’t so relevant since at the moment no female album is really immense on streaming (3m+ EAS is huge but not record-breaking) so there is definitely room to see a new one destroying current leaders during the upcoming months. To put things into perspective, Drake’s Scorpion which is… Read more »

I hope we also get a list of top 50 most streamed music artists on Spotify and top 50 for apple music too. If possible , also top 50 most streamed albums for each of the two music services.

Hi Anthony,

What a great new format! I have to ask: now that Dua Lipa has announced the new ‘Complete’ edition of her eponymous album which will now include One Kiss and several other hits that are currently in the Orphan section, would you then shift these songs to the album or would you leave them as they are because their main lifespan occurred as standalone songs?

Nathan

It’s amazing to see streaming sales of 1 artists 1st album alone blow out streaming sales of almost every act of the 20th century’s entire catalogue.
Why do you think that is?
Older generation still listening to C.D.s and L.P’s?

MJD

Hi Nathan! I think it’s only the way it is and the way it should be. It’s great that some older acts manage to remain attractive through the years, but all generations should have their stars. We party on songs from the Chainsmokers and Drake nowadays, not on songs of the Beatles or Elvis Presley. It’s their videos that we see on TV, their songs we hear on hyped radio stations. It’s also the youngests among us that listen to the most music, so their favorite songs do well. I really think it’s fine that way, imagine 50 years of… Read more »
