Streaming World: Back To 2012

2012 TOP 100 HITS – #20

Maroon 5 feat. Wiz Khalifa – Payphone – 290 404 000

After managing to turn around their fortune with Moves Like Jagger, Maroon 5 have been able to add several more sizable hits to their catalog. The first one to follow it was Payphone. This song stormed into charts everywhere. In the US, it debuted with 493,000 units sold on its first week which remains the highest sales week ever for a group. Ironically, the song debuted at #3 inside the Hot 100. It was blocked by Gotye‘s Somebody That I Used to Know and Carly Rae Jepsen‘s Call Me Maybe. This competition was insane with all 3 songs closing the year inside the annual Top 5 selling songs Worldwide as revealed by the IFPI. In spite of never making the top in the US where it sat at #2 for 6 weeks, Payphone was #5 with 9,1 million units.

Carly Rae Jepsen has actually had a couple of other hits since “Call me maybe”. “Good time”, with owl City, was a top 10 hit in various markets (US, UK, Japan, France, Belgium, Australia). “I really like you” was a european hit in 2015 (#3 in the UK, top 20 in The Netherlands, Austria, Switzerland, Finland, Germany, Denmark). It also reached the top 20 in her native Canada and Japan. Well, that’s about it. 🙂
