Best selling artists, albums and singles of all-time

It has been over 2 years since I introduced to you the Commensurate Sales to Popularity Concept, nicknamed CSPC, in March 2016. This revolutionary concept enables to define accurately the most successful artists ever. During this timeframe I, with the precious help of Hernan Lopez and Anthony Blanchard, studied nearly 100 artists, 1,000 albums plus countless singles and stand-alone tracks worth a gigantic 8,5 billion equivalent album sales combined!

Many of you praised the effort and the ongoing results which really makes us feel great about the website. One recurrent negative feedback though has been the difficulty to navigate the blog. One unique, cross-artist source of data was needed. While I can advise you to use the search function at the top-right, which works really well, an article grouping together the main data is definitely a positive improvement. So, here it is, please say hi to the Data Collector!

This article lists various rankings, with more added frequently, please see the summary on page 2. Top selling singles / albums / artists, per format, per year, per artist type, etc… everything is possible!

Thanks to this Data Collector it isn’t necessary anymore to repeat the comprehensive rankings at the end of each article. It will solve an issue by removing some pages and letting you reach always the same final pages for all acts – CSPC totals, the artist’s singles ranking and their records & achievements. This article will be kept updated which will also prevent us from having lists updated at different moments here and there.

Anthony will handle the updates of this thread from now on and try to answer your questions the best he can. We won’t be answering to lists requests on comments though as it will be impossible to maintain them. Instead, when you request something, and if it is relevant for many people, we will add a page to the article with the said list.

Today has been a great day for most albums. Most have increased in Their LD CSPC. Is it National Music Day 🙂

Little thing: 1962- album raw- Artist ranking. Dylan (first album) sales was 1200000, but now it is completely gone. It was best selling album of1962 (raw). And two Elvis Presley albums are behind no. 2 and no.3. Interesting thing.

hey MJD!

since you know a lot about the french market / charts, i want to ask you a question i always was curious about. do you think you can give a rough estimation of how much did Rai singer Khaled (also known as Cheb Khaled) sell in France????

Thanks 🙂

Padilla

Hello chartmasters team! I know you guys are busy with the Jimi Hendrix article right now, I just wanted to ask out of curiosity not urgency, which artists that have been already studied that you plan on updating relatively soon? I guess if Beyoncé releases a new Solo album like the rumors are floating around that would be the most logical option. acts like Bruno Mars, Justin Bieber and Taylor Swift have been tremendously well too lately so I guess we won’t go that long without an update anyway. and about the light CSPC series, is that making a comeback… Read more »

Hi Padilla! Nothing is defined so far for updates. The likes Taylor Swift and BTS are selling so much and since it requires so little time now to update their sales since our documents are very up to date, they will most likely be updated at least once during the year. These artists are also key to keep our formulas updated as we can test our results against a lot of available information. All ‘half current’ artists like P!nk, Beyoncé or Bruno Mars are also strong contenders, they sell well and we improved so many things that it will be… Read more »

ABBA just had a massive comeback.

How can Neil Diamond or Genesis be more interesting at this time?

MJD

Easy! Even assuming we missed some sales last time an update of ABBA wouldn’t bring them more than 10 million new sales (I’m not counting streams which are already automatically updated). Adding Neil Diamond would add 150 million to our coverage, Genesis well over 100 million too. To me the ultimate goal is to be as complete as possible, so for the same amount of work I definitely prefer adding 100 million to totals than 10 million!

Jake

Neil Diamond has sold 150 million?
That’s just unbelievable considering he’s extremely local.

MJD

That’s about what I expect him to end up on CSPC units. He isn’t local, he is one of the greatest selling artists ever in Australia, and some of his main albums sold nearly as much in Europe than in the US.

Also, Sweet Caroline is maybe the biggest song missing in terms of CSPC totals.

Analord

He’s super famous in the UK, 15 top 10 albums there against 18 in the US.

Kris

Huge artists who haven’t been studied yet are infinitely more interesting to me because we don’t have any sales for them yet….kinda obvious. Abba releasing a comeback album is not the be all and end all in the music industry.

Sonique

Hello! I noticed that the Beatles lost 10M/11M+ of EAS from streams. Before it was 416/417M, now it’s at 406M. I hope you’ll fix this soon. Thank you

Analord

Soundtracks not studied yet that might be in the top 100 albums of all-time (with MJD’s last estimates) :

Top Gun (21.6m)
Footloose (19.1m)
The Sound Of Music (17.8m)
The Lion King (17.5m)

That said, MJD’s estimate for the Flashdance soundtrack used to be 19.5m and now it’s 15.5m, so I assume Footloose might be closer to 15m. Also, The Sound Of Music’s total probably includes non-english versions such as “La Mélodie Du Bonheur”, if it’s the case the real total would be closer to 16m.

TLK actually had more than I thought it would

All performers in The Top 100 should be updated every year.
