Best selling artists, albums and singles of all-time

It has been over 2 years since I introduced to you the Commensurate Sales to Popularity Concept, nicknamed CSPC, in March 2016. This revolutionary concept enables to define accurately the most successful artists ever. During this timeframe I, with the precious help of Hernan Lopez and Anthony Blanchard, studied nearly 100 artists, 1,000 albums plus countless singles and stand-alone tracks worth a gigantic 8,5 billion equivalent album sales combined!

Many of you praised the effort and the ongoing results which really makes us feel great about the website. One recurrent negative feedback though has been the difficulty to navigate the blog. One unique, cross-artist source of data was needed. While I can advise you to use the search function at the top-right, which works really well, an article grouping together the main data is definitely a positive improvement. So, here it is, please say hi to the Data Collector!

This article lists various rankings, with more added frequently, please see the summary on page 2. Top selling singles / albums / artists, per format, per year, per artist type, etc… everything is possible!

Thanks to this Data Collector it isn’t necessary anymore to repeat the comprehensive rankings at the end of each article. It will solve an issue by removing some pages and letting you reach always the same final pages for all acts – CSPC totals, the artist’s singles ranking and their records & achievements. This article will be kept updated which will also prevent us from having lists updated at different moments here and there.

Anthony will handle the updates of this thread from now on and try to answer your questions the best he can. We won’t be answering to lists requests on comments though as it will be impossible to maintain them. Instead, when you request something, and if it is relevant for many people, we will add a page to the article with the said list.

I think there’s a glitch in Britney Spears’ streams, the total seems to have jumped up by a couple million EAS recently. Perhaps I’m wrong tho.

This question and answer, from a couple of weeks ago should explain Justiceforglory 11 days ago Hey! On this list Britney is at 104.8M CSPC units but if we go to her article and add up the newly updated numbers generated by the new auto update system, we get 106.3M. What’s the reason behind this difference and which one is correct? Thank you for your answer! MJD  10 days ago Hi Justiceforglory! It’s incredible how you guys can spot these things! I checked the new album numbers and everything seemed to be fine. Both scripts are based on looking at… Read more »

Kris

Ah okay thanks for clearing it up!

Jazz

Is it true that ever since the #FreeBritney movement started her streams have seen a pretty big spike. It seems like that on Youtube but Im not sure on Spotify because I cant seem to find any links on her total monthly spotify streams, the only available info is for her unique monthly streams which I believe MJD previously said is an unreliable data.

Unfortunately the #FreeBritney movement started prior to the tracking history, but just looking at that, it does seem as though her daily streams have risen from around 2.5m a day, when the tracking started, to around 3.5m-4m a day today.

Also her rating figure which was 81 in April 2020, is now 85 having risen as high as 86 in May/June this year. So yes there definitely does seem an upturn in her Spotify streaming figures, over the past year or so.

most of it is Tiktok traction really, Gimme More, Circus, Oops, Criminal, Work Bitch etc.. All went viral on the app and had streaming boosts because of it

Jazz

Thank u so much for the respond Martin. Much appreciated ☺️☺️☺️

Hey guys! I keep noticing that Lorde isn’t updating in streams for a long time. Is that a bug or on purpose? I would love to see her grow, since her new album Solar Power just got released! 🙂

Amazing that a band like Queen from the 70’s is in the top 50 as the most streamed group (over 16 billion) after Coldplay (20 billion). The quality of the songs is what matters in the end and the songs have something timeless in them for all generations. Drake 60, Eminem 32, Taylor Swift 25, Rhianna 27 billions is no surprise cause they started after the millennium. Good stuff, thanx Chartmasters 🙂

El Jolito

This is a great list, it still needs some updates. Kiss, Deep purple, Alice Cooper, Eric Clapton, Lynryd Skynrd and ZZ top. Still great to see all this.

Damien

So Michael Jackson IS Bigger than Elvis Prestley !

baraka92

Love to see Elvis holding up there in the podium. His streaming numbers, are quite solid. Above Madonna, Whitney Huston, Bruce Springsteen, Billy Joel, ABBA and the Eagles; and on par with U2 and Fleetwood Mac. Not bad for somebody who died almost 45 years ago. I’d bet good money that Baz Luhrman’s upcoming movie about The King is going to do wonders for his catalogue.

Also, I don’t think it will take long before Pink Floyd and the Stones pass Madonna.

Zahdria

Elvis will hold that position for quite some time. However, Queen is catching up to him.

Jules Giddings

Wow, amazing! The amount of work that must have gone into this is huge! Many thanks. 🙂

Justice for BP

the album by blackpink?? it sold around 1.7M pure and has 1.6 billion streams on spotify (which translates to >1 million sales). not to mention its huge youtube views.

Fanofpop

They haven’t been studied yet
They will be studied once they hit 30m album CSPC.
Right now I think they’re around 10-20m, so a couple more years to go.

sweetener

Makes no sense. They should do at least THE ALBUM cause it’s one of the biggest releases of 2020.

imagine putting out there that folklore sold 1,8 m pure copies only, bestie folklore sold 1.3m pure copies in US only by now ,im pretty sure she didnt sell only 500k pure copies outside the us.

angelinai

this is false, folklore sold 4.8 m like in decembar last year, the inflation of dua sales is immense too

El Jolito

Most artists sales drop with each release after they hit a peak. Taylor Swift reached her commercial peak with 1989, from there its been a gradual decline.

Eliza

IS she declining?….It seems to me like Taylor’s currently the most reliable sales force around these days. I gotta respect her longevity. I haven’t looked in depth, just a cursory glance, but it seems to me like Taylor is maintaining her broad mass appeal but the state of the industry around her is what’s declining. I can’t think of too many other artists who could achieve her 2020 numbers, and with a new direction and sound too.

Kris

Even tho she is definitely a reliable sales force, she is still declining. It can be both at the same time. Just like Beyonce–she pulls solid numbers but each album tends to be less than the one before. “Decline” doesn’t = terrible sales, it just means the trend is downwards. I think the biggest difference with Taylor Swifts’s last couple albums is the lack of a big international hit. Her biggest songs from the previous two albums are sitting at ~300M plays on spotify, whereas a big hit nowadays is 1B+ (or at least in the 500M-1B) range. This means… Read more »
