Best selling artists, albums and singles of all-time

It has been over 2 years since I introduced to you the Commensurate Sales to Popularity Concept, nicknamed CSPC, in March 2016. This revolutionary concept enables to define accurately the most successful artists ever. During this timeframe I, with the precious help of Hernan Lopez and Anthony Blanchard, studied nearly 100 artists, 1,000 albums plus countless singles and stand-alone tracks worth a gigantic 8,5 billion equivalent album sales combined!

Many of you praised the effort and the ongoing results which really makes us feel great about the website. One recurrent negative feedback though has been the difficulty to navigate the blog. One unique, cross-artist source of data was needed. While I can advise you to use the search function at the top-right, which works really well, an article grouping together the main data is definitely a positive improvement. So, here it is, please say hi to the Data Collector!

This article lists various rankings, with more added frequently, please see the summary on page 2. Top selling singles / albums / artists, per format, per year, per artist type, etc… everything is possible!

Thanks to this Data Collector it isn’t necessary anymore to repeat the comprehensive rankings at the end of each article. It will solve an issue by removing some pages and letting you reach always the same final pages for all acts – CSPC totals, the artist’s singles ranking and their records & achievements. This article will be kept updated which will also prevent us from having lists updated at different moments here and there.

Anthony will handle the updates of this thread from now on and try to answer your questions the best he can. We won’t be answering to lists requests on comments though as it will be impossible to maintain them. Instead, when you request something, and if it is relevant for many people, we will add a page to the article with the said list.

Keep getting ‘No results found. No credit has been discounted.’ When searching an artist streaming tools

Hi Sarah!

Thank you for noticing, you & the others, I missed that the tool was down. I’ve now reactivated it and we ran the scripts for the most streamed songs and albums as well 🙂

Please update Ariana Grande albums and song sales

the decade lists needs updating when you get the chance

Please correct me if I’m wrong, but on page 17 (Artists Ranking – Raw sales – All Albums) Britney should be a few spots higher considering that her total album sales are 77 565 000 (according to her article). Thank you!

So to confirm, Is Taylor Swift the first artist to debut during 2000-present to reach 100 million CSPC? Hope you put that she is the first.

Impossible to know, her, rihanna and Coldplay all got there in similar times

Hi Nathan!

That’s a very close call, too close to call for a winner with certainty. I’m currently finishing Rihanna’s update, and according to it she broke threw 100 million earlier, but again it’s so close that it doesn’t really makes sense to mention someone ahead of the remaining two.

Still waiting on Chris Brown

Are these counts (Top Albums – EAS and Top Singles – EAS) updated daily with streaming numbers as with Top Artists – EAS?

Ariana grande albums and single sales hasn’t received an update since 2019 , Please update it.

Artist A feat. Artist B&Artist C&Artist D. The song gets 1 Billion streams on Spotify. Artists B, C and D gain 1 Million CSPC each, despite their share, their revenue pulled in is so small.

Hi Clover! This used to not be true. Artist A features artist B. Their hit sells 5m downloads, gets 500m streams and generates 3m album sales. Artist A gets 3m + 5m*0.15 + 500m/1500 = 4.083m CSPC. Artist B gets only points from singles formats as album sales aren’t his, so 1.083m CSPC. This is why we have set things that way at first, I often used the example of Love The Way You Lie to reflect this situation. Obviously as less and less albums are sold, this ‘natural’ downgrade of the featured artists share is disappearing / disappeared. I’m… Read more »

If you look at LTWYL, Rihanna gets 3x less CSPC from it than Eminem when accounting for EAS similiar to BB’s ratio. For streaming only. Would a weighting based on the overall success of an artist make sense. Like if they have sold 100m they get X percent but if they have sold 50-75m they get y percent or something. Like a tier system? of course there will be cases where a featured artist is pulling the majority like UF but usually big artists that are studied claim Colead credits for songs they contribute a lot to unless it’s a… Read more »

It’s complicated, if we make it dependent on the total size of an artist we create a loop in the data. To be honest, I don’t consider downgrading most leads. As I said someone like Rihanna is a major force in all her leads. Unknown vocalists on DJ’s songs are still the lone singers on them. The real feature that would need to be downgraded is the single rap line at the end of the song. Can L.T.B. really get EAS thanks to Black Or White? But It’s where we fall back into the need of listening to every song… Read more »
