CSPC: Shania Twain Popularity Analysis

Shania Twain

I won’t lie, I won’t tell you she’ll return soon. With no album release in 14 years, a comeback for Shania Twain was more than rumoured this year with the Country legend tweeting pictures of recording sessions. However, it didn’t happen. Nevertheless, that is no reason to ignore her past discography which features some true stand-out moments.

It all started rather late for the artist who managed to get her first album out at 28, the age Rihanna is today. This late start was also pretty slow as her eponymous debut was unnoticed by everyone. Everyone except Robert John “Mutt” Lange, the legendary producer of AC/DC, Def Leppard, Foreigner and Bryan Adams’ biggest records. After hearing her, Lange decided to produce her upcoming albums – and also to marry her, something we can’t really blame him for.

Both talents added together took North America and then the world by storm during the second half of the 90s. Among country stars, some have been able to sell a few records elsewhere like Garth Brooks in Ireland and the UK or Willie Nelson in Australasia. None of them got the strength of crossing over most of the world, none that is until Shania Twain.

Often when something unusual happens like such a crossover, the Media overreact and their coverage makes it look much bigger than it really was. What’s the truth? Where has the singer been successful and how just how successful was she? Let apply the Commensurate Sales to Popularity Concept to provide answers.

As a reminder for users who are not yet familiar with the CSPC you do not need to worry, it is quite simple as it only consists in merging every format sales an artist has been getting and attributing them to respective studio albums. We will start by focusing on raw data, setting how much each Shania Twain album sold. Then, we will check sales of each track from those albums on each format – physical, digital and streaming – and weight them to value those figures on a par with album sales. To complete the study, we will study sales of all the compilations, live albums and music videos she dropped. Once all the raw data is set, we will only need to apply appropriate weighting to get the overall picture of the most missed country artist’s career results.

Let’s go!

MJD u mention that no country singer ever managed to break through the international market like Shania did. But how about Kenny Rogers, Dolly Parton and Olivia Newton John. I believe they were quite big globally too at some point right?

Since you confirmed COO now sold 35 million in pure sales, how did it jump from 33.5 million only since 2016? Its catalog sales are way less than this. Since North American, Latin American, Japanese, European and ROW(South Africa known) sales are all consistent and known, what changed the 1.5 million? It is delusional that the missed 1.5 million in Southeast Asia was founded. No reports about it online. Waiting for you reply. Thanks.

OK, I check YouTube Insights, Shania Twain was super huge in Southeast Asia. Bangkok from Thailand, Jakarta from Indonesia and Quezon City from the Philippines was her most streamed cities. The Philippines, Indonesia, Thailand and India were all inside her top 10 most streamed countries. Based on she sold well in most territories, that would suggest millions of albums sold in Southeast Asia, much bigger than the previous estimated 350k for COO. MJD, was that largely change the estimated total? You estimated it by discogs users or what? I read that COO was 9xPlatinum in Indonesia on ukmix, but the… Read more »

Here you said that COO sold over 35 million pure units

Time to update Shania Twain’s CSPC ! She released a brand new album *Now* on September 29, 2017!

I hope Alanis is next. Im so fond of Canadian music artists. 🙂

She had some breakdown moments. And I doubted she will take over Celine or Mariah sales. Country singers always has tougher times to appeal to the wider global audience. Her success was already amazing and it should be prolonged. But its going to be really2 hard for country singers to produce smashing 20 million++ album sales worldwide multiple times. Btw, I also am waiting for Alanis too. I would love to hear MJD comments regarding her. I believe her breakthrough was even bigger than Britney or Madonna but after that her sales just went down and down and never recovers.… Read more »

Why did Shania stopped releasing albums? She really had the potential to even beat Celine, Mariah and Whitney if only she kept on releasing albums.

Throat injury

Very good! can you please post the breakdown of Greatest Hits?

Wow I thought Come on Over was near 35 million. So is that a shipment?

i am very relaxed and definitely not angry. my questions are always related to the artist being discussed, not continuously asking who is next. you always get the same reply: wait and see, and yet you keep asking the same question, even though you should have had a clue by now. but i guess being the educated person that you are, you need time to process the most obvious things 😉 you are welcome to chime in on my posts if you have something constructive to say. i do not understand what being educated has to do with not commenting… Read more »

I’m sorry I wanted to write perhaps I will be boring or repetitive

for god’s sake just wait and see!

Dear pat200

I asked a simple question as indeed you do often for each analysis, it is useless to get angry about nothing, relax, stay cool friend.
I do not speak in your posts with MJD because I’m an educated person, then the expert is MJD, not you !!!

Hi dear MJD !!!

Congratulations for CSPC analysis Shania Twain; perhaps you’ll be boring or repetitive but I’m just curious to know after the legendary Rolling Stones, which group those mentioned by me earlier, you will try to analyze. I hope you answer me soon !!!
Yours sincerely
