After 8 albums Rihanna is up to 33,1 million units sold. She started by following the standard road of success growing album after album until reaching her peak with Good Girl Gone Bad at 8,9 million. The standard road then is to go down again and again until becoming irrelevant by your fifth or sixth album. That’s where truly big artists mark the difference to the others. They don’t collapse, instead, they recover. In fact, for every A-League artist, you will always find a peak-album and then a second one that gave them a new life. Madonna had her Ray of Light, Mariah Carey had The Emancipation of Mimi, U2 had All That You Can’t Leave Behind, Eminem recently had Recovery, and the list goes on and on.
Loud is the album that changed the curve of Rihanna‘s career from standard to remarkable. At the peak of download sales the album still sold a very solid 6,6 million units. Both Talk That Talk and Unapologetic maintained a high level of sales too.
Then comes ANTI at 1,225,000 pure album sales to date. If we look at sales figures only it pales in comparison to its predecessors selling even less than her debut Music of the Sun. As experienced users, by now you know we shouldn’t jump to conclusions too fast. ANTI came out in a very different era. One strongly dominated by streaming, even more so for urban acts. How does it perform then once adding all components of sales? We will found that out today.
