Streaming is made up of two families – audio and video. Our CSPC methodology now includes both to better reflect the real popularity of each track. The main source of data for each avenue is respectively Spotify and YouTube. As detailed in the Fixing Log article, Spotify represents 132 million of the 212 million users of streaming platforms, while YouTube is pretty much the only video platform generating some revenue for the industry. Below is the equivalence set on the aforementioned article:
Audio Stream – 1500 plays equal 1 album unit
Video Stream – 11,750 views equal 1 album unit
Equivalent Albums Sales (EAS) = 212/132 * Spotify streams / 1500 + YouTube views / 11750
Streaming Part 1
This list sums up perfectly why pure album sales aren’t the be-all and end-all of success in our day and age. Even Yours Truly, which was released in early 2013, will soon enough have higher sales from streams than from pure album sales!
This is already true of both My Everything and Dangerous Woman which register respectively 3,07 million and 2,55 million equivalent album sales. Such terrific totals are achieved thanks to massive streams on both platforms, Spotify and YouTube.
My Everything has a stunning total of 5 tracks with more than 300 million streams on Spotify while 3 of them crack 1 billion YouTube views. All album tracks are impressively solid too.
Dangerous Woman has 3 similarly massive songs, the title track, Into You and Side by Side. This latter song has the highest EAS total of all at 740,000 units. Each of its 15 songs are up to at least 25 million streams on Spotify proving Grande‘s huge strength among the public which consumes music via this format.
