CSPC: Demi Lovato Popularity Analysis

Streaming Part 2

The digital smash of the Demi album is confirmed again with outstanding streaming tallies. Heart Attack is on 118 million Spotify streams and 539 million at YouTube. It isn’t alone in the success column as Up, Neon Lights and Really Don’t Care all break the 100 million plateau at both audio and video streaming avenues. Strong album tracks too build a cumulative tally of 699,000 equivalent album units from streams.

Confident’s total isn’t that far behind at 614,000 units, although it should be seen as a truly weaker result. In fact, from 2013 to 2015 the streaming market exploded. It isn’t the only reason to be slightly disappointed, since album tracks and secondary singles are clearly weaker overall than the Demi album too. Its two big hits, Confident and Cool for the Summer, completely counterbalance them with solid showings.

  1. She still hasn’t got massive… she still doesn’t have a big popular hit worldwide… Still behind her peers… I mean, even Selena Gomez upgraded herself and scored some solid hits with her last albums. Let’s not even talk about Ariana or Miley, who are on another level… Demi simply isn’t there… maybe in the future. Not now.

    1. Como que ela não tem hit mundial? ja ouviu falar de heart attack? Up? somebody to you? let it go então…. vc é um leigo more, apenas quer rebaixa-la, mas tente novamente, não foi dessa vez

      1. Hi Elvys,

I’m sorry to say by Gus is correct. Her top seller Heart Attack peaked at #69 in France, #36 in the Netherlands, #34 in Spain, #41 in Australia etc… and that’s where it charted. In Germany it failed the Top 100, same in Italy, Wallonia, Austria, Finland etc. Outside of English-peaking countries it made the Top 10 pretty much nowhere.

As mentioned in the article, depending on where you are from her popularity may be misleading. From Brazil it definitely looks like she got various big global hits, in Europe nobody ever heard those songs.

PS: Obviously Let It Go was big but the well known version is the one of Idina.

    1. Hi Mike,

It sold exactly 10,000 units in its first four weeks in the US and close to nothing elsewhere, at most 30,000 units to date stateside / 50,000 Worldwide which is why there is no specific page about it.

    1. Hi Douglas!

Let It Go was a single of Frozen Soundtrack – it isn’t part of the standard edition of Demi, only on the Deluxe edition. Thus, we decided it was more logical to put it among Orphan singles rather than Demi ones.

    1. Hi Hyuuga,

The inclusion or not of Soundtracks was explained on this article about Whitney Houston. Hannah Montana was Miley Cyrus, albums were sold on her face / name, the second one even had a CD credited to her under the Miley Cyrus name. Camp Rock was a real Soundtrack, focusing on the movie with various artists performing. In fact, it sold more on the back of the Jonas Brothers, that were truly big at the time, than Demi, who had yet to start her solo career.

    2. Hi, thank you so much for updating this! There is a lot of people complaning but dont care, they just dont accept the fact that demi is not as ‘hitmaker’ as they thought.
Do you know something about “no promises”? (Cheat codes recent single featuring demi)
      Thank you!!!

      1. Hi Victor!

No Promises is just getting started at the moment with sales on their way to reach 100,000 units WW in a few weeks. What really matters nowadays though are streams which are looking good, see page 18, they already equal to 58,000 album sales!

  2. Hey – I just want to say amazing work! Can you consider doing Usher?

Also, could you consider compiling a list of the biggest albums of the 2010s so far. Maybe a Top 20, 40 or 50. Thank you so much.

  3. This is a really cool analysis. I think Demi’s biggest issue is poor decision making when it comes to releases. When she’s everywhere i.e. the Unbroken era, they didn’t even release a third single from the album after Give your Heart a Break was a hit or they wait months to announce a single like with Made in the USA. They don’t know how to keep her momentum going and she lacks a defined sound. She’s consistent but if they play their cards right she can finally get her moment. I’m still disappointed that Body Say wasn’t a single.

  4. Hi, could you redo the sales of “Confident” and “Unbroken”? They are probably wrong, Confident sold about 700,000 copies and “Unbroken” 900,000 copies (Unbroken certainly surpassed sales of “Don’t Forget” and “Here We Go Again”). And the album sales for the Confident album are wrong, “Cool for the Summer” sold 1.850 million copies, and “Confident” sold 1,500,000 copies, and “Stone Cold” 400,000 copies, please, I’m not Rude, arrogant or ignorant, but those sales I told you is more real, please change!

    1. Hi Marcus,

I would love to update those figures if you can support them with valid information but I highly doubt it is possible ^^

The most likely scenario is that you are using figures that mix streaming and sales and considering them as sales-only information.

  5. Hello, could you tell us the sales of Heart Attack, Give Your Heart A Break, Cool for the Summer, Let It Go and Skyscraper in the United States and Brazil please!!
