# CSPC: Ed Sheeran Popularity Analysis

5 plus 5 is 10. 5 multiplied by 5 is 25.  5e(5) is 68. 5 powers 5 is 3125. Now that Ed Sheeran has some ideas to keep growing with his upcoming albums, let review his discography up to date, made of a couple of albums, 2011 set + and 2014 smash x.

In a music world when discussions are massively dominated by female artists, the likes Ed Sheeran are rarely considered seriously when speaking about the biggest artists of our era. Twitter discussions and Instagram followings aren’t the be-all and end-all of success yet, so we better check his sales figures before making conclusions.

What’s safe to say is that Ed Sheeran has been featuring incredibly well in Streaming rankings and while this is taking more and more space in the music industry, there is additional metrics to consider to define the English singer real popularity, our goal of today.

As a reminder we will do so by merging every format sales an artist has been getting and attributing them to respective studio albums. We will start by focusing on raw data, setting how much each album sold. Then, we will check sales of each track from those albums on each format – physical, digital and streaming – and weight them to value those figures on a par with album sales. Once all the raw data is set, we will only need to apply appropriate weighting to get the overall picture of Ed Sheeran career results.

Let’s go!

Do you plan to study P!nk? Even though there’s no word about a new album, it would be interesting to see her CSPC results given she’s been active since 2000.

Hi everyone!
I reversed MJD’s formulas to determine the CSP for each track. We could interpret this as the CSP total “due to” a track, so its success.

I have calculated the top 5 below:
Song [Album] = CSP total (millions sales equivalent)

Thinking Out Loud [x] = 4,25
Photograph [x] = 2,61
The A Team [+] = 1,96
I See Fire [x] = 1,87
Don’t [x] = 1,68

4.25 millions equivalent sales is quite big. To give an idea, it’s more than any track released by Rihanna (please see here: http://chartmasters.org/2016/06/cspc-rihanna-popularity-analysis/#comment-1348).

If you have any question/remarks about the method/calculation I used to obtained these numbers, I will be pleased to answer you.
Tony
