Original Album Sales – Comments
1989 Bleach – 5,100,000
1991 Nevermind – 27,400,000
1993 In Utero – 12,100,000
Now that’s what I call a short discography. Nevermind is clearly a massive selling album with a tally that keeps increasing at fast pace year after year. In Utero is often disregarded but 12 million copies sold is huge no matter what. On its side, Bleach achieved an impressive total of 5 million copies sold strictly as a catalog album, despite none of its songs being initially known.
The band do not have a gigantic selling compilation, even if 2002 set Nirvana sold over 7 million. They definitely sold bucket loads of various other formats yet. Rarities records like Incesticide sold a lot, boxsets a la With The Lights Out too and more than anything their live records did wonders, led by the cult MTV Unplugged In New-York, one of the very best selling live album ever at nearly 16 million.
All those albums contain new songs, all of which will be accounted under the Orphan Album folder which will thus be highly relevant in Nirvana case.
